Penny continued to reiterate that Richt is a high character person. Miami needed someone like Richt to make the Hurricanes relevant again much as he did for Georgia. Penny felt that Richt was not the right coach to get them to rank among the elite programs in College Football. It took Smart only two seasons to do that.

Miami’s 2018 season through the first seven games has played out in a very familiar way to Penny. He emphasized that to Canes Warning.

"“You lost to LSU, makes sense, they’re pretty damn good and just whipped us! This season (for Miami) is like every year for Richt here. Then won five games against poor team(s). And inexplicably lost to UVA. Substitute UVA for South Carolina or Georgia Tech and it’s the story of his career for us. It’s how pretty every year post-2005 went except 2012 when we were so damn close And a couple of bad years…”"

We asked Penny for clarification on what happened pre-2005. After a four-loss season during RIcht debut year in Athens in 2001, Georgia lost nine games between 2002-05. Penny explained how Georgia’s success changed once Saban was hired at Alabama and Meyer at Florida.

"“Saban was at LSU and then the Dolphins so hadn’t built Bama…Meyer hadn’t arrived in Florida. Once Meyer arrived it all went wrong. Richt did well when Ron Zook was there (At Florida), then Meyer came and the wheel turned and the Gators never looked back.”"

Richt went won only one of six games against Meyer while he was at Florida. Georgia was outscored by an average of 31.5 to 20.6 during Richt and Meyer’s meetings in Jacksonville.

Georgia and LSU played four times during Saban’s tenure in Baton Rouge. They split the four games with LSU winning the first two and Georgia the final two. Each team won one regular season game and one SEC Championship against the other.

dark. Next. Are Richt recruiting classes following same pattern from UGA?

Georgia played Alabama four times with Richt and Saban leading their programs. After winning the initial game against the Crimson Tide, Georgia dropped the final three. Richt has won three out of eight games against Saban in his career.
