A similarly disturbing pattern seems to be developing at Miami. Four-star offensive tackles Kai-Leon Herbert and Zalon’tae Hillery from Miami’s 2017 signing class have not reached their potential. Herbert and Hillery have been passed by 2018 True Freshman Delone Scaife on the depth chart.

  • Scaife is starting at right tackle after Sophomore Navaughn Donaldson didn’t play well there this season. Donaldson has returned to right guard where he was a True Freshman All-American in 2017.

Richt has signed three classes at Miami. He got a late start for the Hurricanes 2016 class which signed about two months after Richt was hired. Tackle Tre’ Johnson was the only offensive lineman Miami signed in 2016. Johnson departed earlier this year after two seasons with the Hurricanes.

Miami signed five offensive linemen in 2017, Of those Donaldson is the only one who has made a major impact. Miami’s offensive line was dominated by Florida State, North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Clemson last season.

This year the Miami offensive struggled against LSU, the Seminoles and although the overall numbers were good, Virginia. LSU and Florida State held Miami to under three yards per carry. Virginia would have done the same but the Hurricanes rushing yardage total was significantly inflated by a Travis Homer 70 yard run.
