Miami Hurricanes Head Coach Mark Richt and Boston College Head Coach Steve Addazio have a big coincidental connection in common. They have both succeeded Al Golden in their careers.

Boston College Head Coach Steve Addazio and the Miami Hurricanes Mark Richt are connected through Al Golden’s decision to leave Temple University and take the Head Coaching position at the University of Miami following the 2010 season.

Al Golden coached at Temple from 2006-10. He compiled a 27-34 record during his five seasons with the Owls. Golden was hired at Miami after leading Temple to a 17-8 record in his final two seasons. The Owls lost to UCLA 30-21 in the 2009 Eagle Bank Bowl. That was their only bowl game in Golden’s five seasons.

Addazio succeeded Golden as the Head Coach at Temple. He had spent the previous five seasons on Urban Meyer’s staff at Florida. Addazio was the Gators Offensive Coordinator in 2009-10. The Gators were tenth in scoring and sixth in total offense in Addazio’s first season as the OC.

Addazio’s second season running Florida’s offense wasn’t nearly successful, to put it mildly. The Gators were 83rd in total offense and 43rd in scoring offense. In spite of the precipitous fall, Addazio was still hired to replace Golden when he left for Miami.

Prior to being on Meyer’s staff at Florida, He was an Assistant Coach for ten seasons at the FBS level. He got familiar with the Miami Hurricanes as an Assistant at Syracuse from 1995-98 as the tight ends and then offensive line coach.

Addazio then left to coach the tackles, tight ends and special teams at Notre Dame from 1999-2001. Addazio’s final Assistant Coaching job before joining Meyer’s staff in Gainesville was as the Offensive Line Coach at Indiana from 2002-04. He added Offensive Coordinator for the 2004 season.

Addazio spent only two seasons in Philadelphia coaching Temple. He went 9-4 in his first season with a 37-15 New Mexico Bowl win over Wyoming at the end of the year. Temple reverted back to form with a 4-7 season in 2012. Addazio’s 13-11 record in Philly was good enough to get him hired at Boston College.

  • Golden meanwhile had three and a half more years in Miami. The Hurricanes finished 32-25 under Golden. They were just 17-18 in the ACC. Golden was 20-12 in four years in the MidAmerican with Temple. That is the same conference that Toledo who Miami has defeated in the last two seasons is in.

The Owls were 1-11 as an independent in Golden’s first season in 2006 and 6-11 in non-conference games during their four seasons in the MAC. Golden was hired by Miami after finishing 8-4 overall and 5-3 in the MAC in 2010.

Golden’s four seasons with the Hurricanes were anything but. In Golden’s first season Miami went 2-1 against ranked teams. They finished 3-11 against the top 25 and 0-5 against Florida State during Golden’s tenure as Head Coach. Golden was fired following a 58-0 loss to Clemson in October 2015.

That loss was the worst in Miami football history. Larry Scott took over and led Miami to a 4-2 record as the interim Head Coach. Richt was hired less than a week after he was hired by Georgia in November/December 2015.

Richt has helped turned around by reaching several accomplishments that alluded the Miami Hurricanes under Golden and his predecessor former UM linebacker Randy Shannon.

Under Richt, the Miami Hurricanes have signed better-recruiting classes, gotten the Carol Soffer Indoor Practice Facility built. ended a  ten-year streak with without a bowl victory, won their first ACC Coastal Division title and had their first ACC Championship game appearance and played in their first tier-one bowl since 2004.
