Miami Hurricanes QB situation brings more hyperbole from Mark Richt
During his weekly teleconference, Miami Hurricanes Head Coach Mark Richt said that they will stick with Malik Rosier as their starting quarterback.
Rosier started and played the entire game in the Miami Hurricanes 27-14 loss to Boston College on Friday night and played most of the game in a 16-13 loss at Virginia two weeks ago.
Richt was point blank asked who the starting quarterback would be the starting quarterback against Duke on Saturday. Richt’s response was very matter of factly “Malik will be the starter.”
Both Rosier and Redshirt Freshman N’Kosi Perry have struggled with accuracy this season. While the fanbase has pulverized social media with wanting Perry as the starter he hasn’t proven that he’s the savior like a Tua Tagovailoa is for Alabama.
Miami’s passing offense has been extremely erratic this season. Both Perry and Rosier have made some big plays this year. They both have had issues taking care of the football at times.
Miami is 115th in the nation in completion percentage, 109th with ten interceptions thrown, 83rd in quarterback rating and 93rd with 203.5 passing yards per game.
Richt continues to hold on to his belief that Rosier gives the Miami Hurricanes the best chance to win. The quotes are courtesy of Susan Miller Degnan of the Miami Herald.
"“Malik is the starter…Like I’ve said a lot of times, I feel like he can handle the game plan the best right now and gives us the best shot…If that changes, then that will change. That’s where we’re at right now.”"
In the ten days leading up to the Boston College game after Rosier was named the starter following the loss at Virginia Richt said that Perry would get playtime against the Eagles. When pressed more he said that it wasn’t a 100 percent decision the Redshirt Freshman would play against Boston College.
Richt followed that up with saying when is something ever 100 percent. On Sunday he reiterated that Perry would play again this season but was not 100 percent commital.
"“I think we’ll see Kosi again before the season’s over…How much depends on how practices go and all that, and it depends on how games go, as well, but we definitely want to continue to get him in the game and continue to get him better. I didn’t do it last week, but don’t be shocked to see him this week.”"
Until Perry actually gets more playing time this seems like more hyperbole from Richt. After the loss to Boston College, there was a lot of coach speak and excuses instead of accountability regarding how the offense could be better going forward.
It seems like right now that Rosier and Perry are the only options at quarterback. Redshirt Freshman Cade Weldon is sitting out a four-game suspension. The last of those games is Saturday against Duke.
True Freshman Jarren Williams can only play in four games this season before he loses his redshirt. Williams only appearance this season was in Miami’s week two 77-0 victory against Savannah State.
The Hurricanes have four games remaining this season. After Duke, they play at Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech before finishing the regular season against Pittsburgh at Hard Rock Stadium on November 24. Richt spoke about Williams future this season.
"“He’s progressing because we do get him reps in practice. Like I said, a lot of times the No. 3 quarterback doesn’t get many, if any, reps during practice. But we’ve continued to give Jarren reps because we like what we see and we like his progression.I’m mostly thinking what it takes to win the game more so than trying to manage whether a guy gets some snaps in the game or not with the new redshirt rule. But if an opportunity arises for that situation obviously there’s no reason to hold it back. But I’m not thinking that far down the road right this minute.”"
Richt has implied that Williams is the future since Spring Practice began six months ago, He has repeatedly stated that the True Freshman quarterback is the most accurate on the Hurricanes roster.
The stats from the spring bore that out. In his only appearance, this season Williams completed one pass for 17 yards and also had a rushing touchdown.
A lot of what Richt has said seems to be predetermined. It’s as if he is speaking off of a script. Some of the Miami Hurricanes fanbase and media have speculated that something more might be going on with Perry after he posted a video sitting in a car with a wad of cash.
Neither Rosier or Perry seems to be the answer at quarterback. There more problems with the Miami Hurricanes offense than who is under center. Richt’s play calling, his archaic offensive system and an inconsistent offensive line have all hindered the Hurricanes stagnant offense in 2018.
