The Miami Hurricanes collapse this season continued after a loss on Friday night to Boston College. During his weekly appearance on the Joe Rose show Canes Head Coach Mark Richt was as passionate as he’s been during his tenure in Coral Gables.

The Mark Richt Show segment on Rose’s Morning Show on the Miami Hurricanes flagship station WQAM delved right into the loss against Boston College on Friday and the thought about naming Malik Rosier as the starting quarterback against Duke on Saturday night at Hard Rock Stadium.

The losses to Virginia and Boston College and Rosier getting the vast majority of snaps against the Cavaliers and all of the snaps against the Eagles has set off Miami Hurricanes social media with questions why Rosier is starting ahead of Redshirt Freshman N’Kosi Perry.

The Miami Hurricanes fanbase and a sizeable portion of the South Florida Media are growing increasingly frustrated with the offense and the play calling from Mark Richt. Richt has repeatedly been questioned on if there is more going on with Perry not playing than he is releasing publically.

Among those wondering what’s really going on with Perry is Alex Donno who hosts the Miami Hurricanes pregame show and has a nighttime talk show on WQAM from 6-10PM every night.

Mark Richt came out firing when Rose asked him about why he named Rosier the starter at quarterback on Sunday, six days before Miami plays Duke this weekend. Christy Cabrera Chirinos of the Sun Sentinel summed up what Richt said.

"“I’ve decided he’s the starter, and that’s what I’ve decided…It’s based on what we know and what other people don’t know, I guess.”[Perry’s] not in the doghouse. He’s just still developing and still getting to the point where he can handle everything that was going to come his way. He’s close and we’ll see how this week goes. But that’s where we’re at right now.”"

Rose who usually tempers his opinions in relation to Richt questioned how genuine his statements were after Richt got off the air. Accuracy has been a major issue this season with both Perry and Rosier under center.

Miami is 115th in the nation in completion percentage, 109th with ten interceptions thrown, 83rd in quarterback rating and 93rd with 203.5 passing yards per game. Richt spoke about what needs to be done at quarterback to improve the play the Hurricanes get going forward.

"“When everything is right, you have to be accurate enough to hit guys on the run. That’s his part,…But offense is about 11 guys doing it right and we’re still not getting that consistency across the board. We’re still getting too many mistakes by this one guy.Again, if you have 11 guys and they only make one mistake in the game, you could cost 11 different drives. So everybody on offense has got to get it right. That’s coaching. We have to do a better job of getting our guys to be able to do that. The bottom line is, it’s not just the quarterback. It’s the center, it’s the guards, tackles, tight ends, wide receivers, backs, it’s everybody in cohesion doing things right. That’s when things go well offensively.”"

  • Richt might have slightly tipped his hand that something may be going on that is not out publically. It could also be no more than Perry just isn’t ready to play on the field or posses the leadership it takes to succeed off of it.

"“I’m ready to go. We all take pride in what we do. A lot of things get bantered around by people who don’t…I’m not saying they don’t know football, but they don’t know exactly what’s going on.It’s hard for people to make … to figure things out. Obviously, the quarterback position is the most visible one. That’s the one everyone wants to talk about the most.”"

Miami has not gotten good play at quarterback this season from either Perry or Rosier. The old saying is the most popular player on a football team is the backup quarterback. Since Rosier succeeded Brad Kaaya in 2017 as the Miami quarterback that has certainly been true.

A sizeable portion of the Miami Hurricanes fanbase wanted Perry to win the starting quarterback job both in 2017 and ’18. Rosier will be gone after this season and we get to start the entire quarterback controversy all over again next spring.
