Five big name programs in worse situations than Miami Hurricanes
Losses to LSU, Virginia and Boston College this season have plummeted the Miami Hurricanes from the eighth-ranked team in the preseason to completely out of the Top 25. Miami is not alone among programs that have fallen from College Football’s elite.
Florida State, Nebraska, Tennessee, UCLA and USC are all programs that have been among the nation’s elite. FSU, Nebraska, Tennesee and USC have all won National Championships like the Miami Hurricanes since the dawn of the BCS National Championship Game in 1998 and then the College Football Playoff in 2014.
Tennessee defeated Florida State 23-16 in the first BCS National Championship Game in the Fiesta Bowl following the 1998 season. The Seminoles won the 1999 National Championship with a 46-29 victory over Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl.
Florida State lost a third straight National Championship game 13-2 to Oklahoma after the 2000 season in the Orange Bowl. That was the season that generated controversy after FSU earned the bid over the Miami Hurricanes despite losing to them earlier that season.
Miami got it’s redemption when it defeated Nebraska 37-14 in the Rose Bowl for the 2001 National Championship. That was the beginning of a short-lived Miami Hurricanes dynasty. Miami reached the Fiesta Bowl with a 34 game winning streak the following season. Everyone reading this knows what happened.
During the BCS and College Football Playoff Era the five teams currently in worse situations than the Miami Hurricanes have made 11 appearances combined. Ten of those were in the BCS National Championship Game. Florida State won the last BCS National Championship game and appeared in the first College Football Playoff.
