Gino Torretta has strong statements about Miami Hurricanes
Miami Hurricanes Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Gino Torretta became the latest former UM star to question the Canes offense. He joined the Hochman and Crowder show Tuesday afternoon on the Miami flagship station WQAM.
Torretta is not a stranger to talk radio or analyzing football. He is a talk show host on the College Sports channel on Sirius/XM and also is a college football game analyst. The former Miami Hurricanes quarterback, National Champion and Heisman Trophy winner had a lot of similar thoughts as other former Miami greats.
Former Miami Hurricanes National Championship Head Coach Jimmy Johnson also had thoughts on what’s happened to the Miami Hurricanes this season. Johnson spoke to the Joe Rose show earlier on Wednesday. Johnson told Rose and co-host Zach Krantz that he believes, especially in college that Head Coaches should not call plays.
The biggest issue that seems to baffle everyone from fans and the Miami Hurricanes beat writers to football alums and talk show hosts is what’s going on at quarterback. Miami Head Coach Mark Richt shuffled Senior starter Malik Rosier and Redshirt Freshman backup N’Kosi Perry in and out at quarterback against Duke.
Torretta was asked point blank out of the box by WQAM host Mark Hochman what is happening at quarterback. Torretta finished his Miami Hurricanes career in the top five in passing attempts, completions and yards. He is the only Miami player to win a Heisman trophy and National Championship.
"“I don’t think we’re getting the whole story. I think there is something else going on…either he doesn’t feel comfortable knowing the whole offense…There is something there that we’re missing.”"
The Miami Hurricanes defense continues to be among the best in the nation. They are top five in several categories and allowing 19.3 points per game. Torretta was not happy with the fact that the defense has been so dominant and the Canes are not one of the best teams in the country.
"“If your defense is able to hold you’re opponent to 20 points a game you’re tops in the country."
Richt has shuttled Perry and Rosier in and out of the lineup since Perry played spectacularly in his first couple of series against FIU. The assumption is often made that it can mess with a player’s confidence.
"I don’t know that that messes with a players confidence. I’d be pissed. There are things you can do to build a players confidence. The first couple of throws, a hitch, a screen pass. That builds a quarterbacks confidence when using play action. I don’t see a lot of that. He (Perry) probably has mixed signals.(Richt) doesn’t have a lot a confidence in either one. Kelly Bryant. If he can come in and play this year . I just think that (Miami has) never been program’s rely on Junior College players or players that transfer in. If we’re reaching out to him when they (Richt and his staff) feel that no one on the roster can play at the Divison I level."
Richt has received a lot of criticism over the past few weeks for his game planning and play calling. Torretta didn’t understand why The Miami Head Coach doesn’t make more of an effort to get the ball into his best players hands. He specifically discussed Sophomores DeeJay Dallas at running back and Jeff Thomas at wide receiver.
"“If I am game planning for Miami, I try to get DeeJay Dallas the ball in space and Jeff Thomas the ball on the run. Find ways to get them the ball. I get tired of watching bubble screen and jet sweeps and we don’t run them. Get Thomas the ball on the edge."
The final discussion between Hochman and Crowder and Torretta is if Miami can beat Georgia Tech and what they need to do to accomplish that.
"If we blow up the (Georgia Tech) fullback on an option. At some point in time the offense has got to carry the load. I dont see a lot of push on the offensive line. Its dissapointing.Based on how they’re playing this last couple (of games) its not good. (Torretta was) most upset that Duke players were talking smack in the locker room that “this isnt old school Miami.”"
Miami will try to end a three-game losing streak when they travel at Atlanta to play Georgia Tech. The Hurricanes poor play goes back further than their losing streak. They have only covered the point spread once in their last six games.
Miami has defeated Georgia Tech three-straight times and has won eight of their last nine against the Yellow Jackets. The Hurricanes won the last meeting in Atlanta 35-21 in 2016 on the strength of then Freshmen Shaq Quarterman and Joe Jackson returning fumbles for touchdowns.
