Was a no brainer for Miami Hurricanes to reach out to Kelly Bryant
As Canes Warning posed last week it was a no-brainer for the Miami Hurricanes to reach out to former Clemson quarterback Kelly Bryant as reported by Inside the U.
The Miami Hurricanes situation at quarterback seems to be getting worse game by game. The Canes offense during their three-game losing streak to Virginia, Boston College and Duke is the worst troika of games for UM since 2012.
The Miami Hurricanes scored 37 points in that three-game sequence in losses to ninth-ranked Notre Dame, North Carolina and unranked Virginia. This season the Cavaliers, Eagles and Blue Devils were all unranked at the time they defeated the Hurricanes.
Miami desperately needs to upgrade their quarterback play. Malik Rosier has not been the answer this year and he graduates. Redshirt Freshman N’Kosi Perry has not lived up the unrealistic expectations of what the Hurricanes fanbase expected of him.
Perry’s classmate Cade Weldon and True Freshman Jarren Williams have not received enough playing time to prove if they can be the future. Weldon is eligible to return Saturday after a four-game suspension. There has been no indication whether or not Weldon will get any playing time in the final three games of the regular season.
Williams is far more likely to be the quarterback that receives snaps if they are not all taken by Rosier and Perry. At this point, the only reason to play Rosier would be to qualify for a bowl game than improve where the Miami Hurricanes play in the postseason.
Inside the U’s Andrew Ivins was the first to break the story that Miami has contacted Bryant to see if he would be interested in playing for the Hurricanes next season. Bryant has already reportedly taken visits to Arkansas, Missouri and North Carolina. Clemson’s biggest rival, South Carolina is also a potential landing spot.
Bryant will be eligible to play immediately in 2019 as a graduate transfer. He would be a big upgrade for the Hurricanes at quarterback. Bryant could start for Miami next season, give Perry and/or Williams another year to sit and learn the position and hopefully be ready in 2020.
According to Ivins, a source close to Bryant spoke to Inside the U about the former Clemson starting quarterback playing at Miami in 2020.
"“A source close to former Clemson quarterback Kelly Bryant told 247Sports on Tuesday that the Hurricanes recently made contact with the dual-threat talent and have expressed interest in bringing him to UM.”"
Miami doesn’t currently have a quarterback committed to them for the Class of 2019. That would leave Perry, Weldon and Williams as the only scholarship quarterbacks on the roster in 2019. When asked about the quarterback situation for the future quarterback Mark Richt said they are always looking.
"“We are always on the lookout…I do think the young quarterbacks [we have] are talented and they have the skillset to get the job done. I think they are learning as they go.I do believe these guys have the ability to get it done, but we are always open-minded about finding ways to get us better at the quarterback position and every position across the board.”"
As has been the case during the last four weeks (Miami had a bye after the loss to Virginia) Richt’s answer came across as very generic. He cannot speak about any potential recruits by name or players currently enrolled at other schools.
In his article breaking the news that Miami reached out to Bryant and during an appearance on the Big O show on WQAM on Wednesday Ivins said he expects Bryant to wind up at Arkansas. Bryant was recruited out of high school by Arkansas Head Coach Chad Morris who used to be the Offensive Coordinator at Clemson.
Bryant also has trips planned to Mississippi State and Florida State. Both the Rebels and Seminoles have offensive minded Head Coaches in their first seasons. The Rebels hired Joe Morehead who turned around the Penn State offense the last two seasons and Wille Taggart is at Florida State.
