The Miami Hurricanes head to Georgia Tech hoping to end a three-game losing streak. While the offense has struggled it’s Manny Diaz’s defense that has the biggest challenge against the Yellow Jackets.
Georgia Tech plays the old triple option offense, also known as the wishbone. Very few schools continue to run the triple-option. It seems to be the perfect anecdote for the aggressive Miami Hurricanes defense. Diaz’s defense did a good job against Georgia Tech the past two seasons.
Miami owns a three-game winning streak against Georgia Tech and has won eight of the last nine games against the Yellow Jackets. In last season’s 25-24 comeback victory Miami held Georgia Tech to 226 yards rushing on 53 carries. That’s an average of 4.26 yards per carry.
In 2016 Georgia Tech produced 267 yards rushing for an average of 4.9 YPC. Miami tipped the game in the second quarter with three touchdowns in less than two minutes, two of them defensively.
Shaq Quarterman and Joe Jackson who were both Freshmen the last time the Miami Hurricanes traveled to Atlanta returned fumbles for touchdowns 46 seconds apart to extend the Canes lead to 28-7. They went on to win 35-21.
Georgia Tech enters Saturday’s game with the Miami Hurricanes as one of the nation’s hottest teams. The Yellow Jackets have won four of their last five games and are back in the hunt to win the ACC Coastal Division. Georgia Tech is averaging 46 points per game over their last five and 54 PPG in their wins.
Their one loss in the last six weeks (with a bye included) was 28-14 at home, nearly a month ago, against the same Duke team that upset the Miami Hurricanes at Hard Rock Stadium last week.
