Miami Hurricanes Five biggest wins vs Virginia Tech

1) 2001 Miami 26 Virginia Tech 24

Like 2002, Miami’s win over Virginia Tech in 2001 sent them to the National Championship game. It was the culmination of seven seasons of rebuilding the program by Butch Davis and Larry Coker.

After Virginia Tech took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter the Hurricanes came storming back. Miami scored 20 points in the second quarter to lead 20-3 at halftime. The Hokies scored two unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter after a Todd Sievers field goal game Miami a 26-10 lead.

A Jarrett Ferguson one-yard touchdown run followed by a two-point conversion pulled Virginia Tech within 26-18 with 8:33 left in the fourth quarter. Two and a half minutes later Virginia Tech blocked a Miami punt and returned it for a touchdown.

Hokies wide receiver Earnest Wilford was wide open dropped the two-point conversion pass. Wilford went on to a seven-year NFL career.

Miami won 26-24 and clinch a spot in the National Championship game at the Rose Bowl. The Hurricanes went on to crush Nebraska 37-14 in Pasadena to claim their fifth and most recent National Championship.

Clinton Portis led Miami to victory. Portis ran for 124 yards on 34 carries and added 35 yards on two receptions in the victory. Sievers also came up clutch making four out of five field goal attempts in the victory.
