In a since-deleted Instagram post, Miami Hurricanes Freshman defensive back Gilbert Frierson transmitted the news that UM starting quarterback N’Kosi Perry would be suspended for the Pinstripe Bowl on Thursday against Wisconsin.
The Instagram post was the latest on social media by a Miami Hurricanes player to report that Perry would be suspended for the game against the Badgers. Freshman tight end Brevin Jordan sent out a tweet this weekend that Redshirt Senior Malik Rosier would start in the Pinstripe Bowl.
News broke on Friday that Perry was caught up in another social media storm. The Miami Hurricane student newspaper reported that a since-deleted sexually explicit video was posted to Perry’s Snapchat account in September. The video made the rounds of the Miami student body on November.
Three student journalists broke the story of the video on Friday. The next question on the mind of everyone who follows the Miami Hurricanes is will Perry play against Wisconsin. Christy Cabrera Chirinos of the Sun Sentinel broke the story of Frierson’s Instagram video on Christmas Eve morning.
At the time of Chirinos’ story and as late as 1:00 PM Eastern Time the video was still posted. Sometime between 1:00 PM ET and 3:30 ET the video was taken down. Chirinos reported that Perry was quoted off camera discussing the suspension. He admitted a suspension while the team was at a comedy show.
"“I’m suspended, bro…”"
In Frierson’s IG video, Perry’s teammates were urging him not to discuss the suspension per Chirinos. Comedian Leonard Ouzts went around the room asking who were the starters for Miami and Wisconsin.
Perry was asked by Ouzts about his wardrobe according to Chirinos. Two of Perry’s Miami teammates can be heard on the video.
"“Shh. But don’t say that…Yeah, yeah, just raise your hand.”"
Perry and Rosier have alternated starts this season with each of them starting six games. Perry has appeared in ten games this season and Rosier seven. Both have been streaky. Their inconsistencies stalled the Hurricanes offense throughout the season.
If Perry is suspended it would be his second of the season. He was left home for Miami’s 2018 season opener against LSU. The reasons stated by Head Coach Mark Richt was the standard violation of team rules.
This is the third time this season that Perry has had an indiscretion in 2018. He posted a video of himself to his Instagram account earlier this season riding in a car with a wad of cash on his lap. Richt commented on Perry’s poor choice on the IG post.
"“Covered our bases on everything…It’s been addressed. It was not very mature obviously…He didn’t break any laws. He didn’t break any NCAA rules. He’s in good standing, but the image is not good. We don’t like that. He’s just got to be more mature and more wise with what he does. I didn’t like it. He knows that. He knows that it was not a very wise thing to do…Like I said, it’s been addressed. No rules have been broken. He’s in good standing.”"
Perry’s problems are part of a bigger problem at quarterback for Miami. Perry’s Redshirt Freshman classmate, quarterback Cade Weldon was suspended for four games and True Freshman QB Jarren Williams who is redshirting this season was left home for Miami’s victory at Virginia Tech last month.
The question in the short and long term is what to do with Perry. Three seemingly significant poor choices by your starting quarterback off the field is not you would expect from the signal caller at a school with as much tradition as Miami. Two Hurricanes quarterbacks have won the Heisman Trophy.
Richt has a pair of decisions with Perry. Will he suspend his starting quarterback for the Pinstripe Bowl and what does this mean for Perry’s long-term future as the Hurricanes starting quarterback in the interim and beyond?
We will find out the former quickly. The latter could come as soon as the season ends or might take all the way through training camp in August.
