That made it five consecutive streaks of four or more wins or losses in a row. The Hurricanes had seemed to turn the season around and on the path to repeating their ACC Coastal Division title from 2017. A road loss at Virginia spiraled the Hurricanes into another four-game losing streak.

The loss to Virginia was followed by one at Boston College following the bye week and then a questionable one at home to Duke. A loss at Georgia Tech left Miami at 5-5. The Hurricanes went from hoping to make a run at the College Football Playoff to needing a win in their last two games to become bowl eligible.

Miami football won at Virginia Tech and finished the season by defeating Coastal Division Champion Pittsburgh at home to get a measure of revenge on the Panthers who defeated them in Pittsburgh last season when they went to Heinz field as Coastal Champions.

Pittsburgh suffered the same fate as Miami getting crushed by Clemson in the ACC Championship game. Clemson earned its fourth straight bid to the College Football Playoff.

Entering the Pinstripe Bowl on a two-game winning streak Miami seemed to have turned the season around. Instead, they had their worst performance in an abysmal 35-3 loss to Wisconsin. Three days later Richt announced his retirement.
