New Miami Football Head Coach Manny Diaz is reportedly interested in former North Carolina Head Coach Larry Fedora as his Offensive Coordinator according to a report by the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson.

Fedora would be a controversial choice as the Offensive Coordinator for the Miami football team to succeed Thomas Brown who Diaz relieved of his duties on New Year’s Eve.

At the ACC Kickoff Media Days last summer while still coaching North Carolina Fedora mentioned that Football is under attack, it won’t recognizable in ten years and the USA will go down because of it. Fedora elaborated that football has not been proven to cause CTE.

He did state that the game is safer than it’s ever been. It’s still a troubling statement from a man expected to lead young men and inform them of the correct techniques to play football.

Fedora has an extensive background as an FBS Assistant and Head Coach. He was the Head Coach at Southern Mississippi from 2008-11 before leading North Carolina from 2012-18. Fedora was 34-19 at Southern Miss and 45-43 at North Carolina.

With current Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky leading the way the 2015 Tar Heels won the ACC Coastal Division title. North Carolina finished 5-18 the last two seasons. Those finishes with the controversial comments were too much for Fedora to overcome. He was replaced by Diaz’s former boss Mack Brown.

Diaz’s background prior to becoming a Head Coach was with skill position players on Offense. He was an assistant with FBS schools Baylor, Air Force, Middle Tennessee, Florida and Oklahoma State. Fedora learned under Urban Meyer at Florida. Fedora’s background is in the Spread Offense.

North Carolina had top 20 offenses nationally under Fedora in 2012 and ’14. The Tar Heels plummeted to 97th in 2017 before elevating to 31st this season. North Carolina had mostly balanced offenses under Fedora.

With what Miami has returning at running back versus the relative inexperience at quarterback and wide receiver Miami would be wise to lean on the running game in 2019. Jackson stated a quote from General George S. Patton that Fedora said in his introductory news conference at North Carolina about his philosophy.

"”Instead of waiting to see what might develop, attack constantly, vigorously and viciously. Never let up, never stop, always attack.”"

Fedora’s aggressive approach seems to mesh well with what Diaz likes to do on defense and what his approach will be offensively as a Head Coach. Fedora will know the ACC well and could be a good fit for Diaz. Whoever Diaz hires as the New Miami Offensive Coordinator will oversee an entirely new Offensive Staff.

Brown and the entire Miami Offensive Staff was let go by Diaz on New Year’s Eve. Diaz and the Miami administration came to an agreement that a completely new start with the offensive staff was the right way to go. Diaz now has five openings available on his coaching staff. The entire defensive staff appears to be returning.
