Miami football needs recruits who want to build something special
The Hurricanes are in a similar place to where they were following the 1982 Football season. After winning their first ACC Coastal Division title and making their first ACC Championship game appearance the team took a step back this season. They went from 10-3 with a berth in the Orange Bowl to 7-6 and the Pinstripe Bowl.
They could also be compared to 1984 when although they were coming off of a National Championship the Miami football program took a step back and finished 8-5 under first-year Head Coach Jimmy Johnson.
Diaz has to find players who want to play be a part of the Miami football program and build something special again. Quarterman, Pinckney and Freshman defensive tackle Nesta Silvera appear to be those kinds of players. Diaz spoke about what Miami means to Silvera after he signed last year.
"“Nesta is a pure Cane. We felt that all the way. The way he plays the game, his disruptive manner, the violence he plays with, he plays like how a Miami Hurricane defender should play like.”"
Silvera echoed his Coach’s sentiments when he signed with Miami. He also reiterated it after Richt announced his retirement a few hours before Diaz was announced as the new Miami Head Coach in December.
"“Why not make the crib great? I could go to Tuscaloosa, I could go to Gainsville, I could go to Tallahassee and make those schools great. Why not make the crib great?”"
Diaz and the Hurricanes staff need to sign more players with Silvera’s mentality. Miami had momentum after the 2017 season. That showed with many of the verbal commits that the Surge ’19 Class had.
Several players committed to signing with Miami in 2019 de-committed and signed elsewhere. The Hurricanes 2019 class plummeted to 33rd in the current 247Sports composite rankings.
Diaz and his staff have a lot of work to do and a short period of time to do it. The dead period in recruiting ends on January 10. National Signing Day is February 6. That is 27 days to deliver signees that can move the Surge ’19 Class up in the rankings. They need players dedicated to restoring the Hurricanes swagger.
