Miami basketball tries for ACC win of 2019 when they host Wake Forest

The Miami basketball team tries to win their first ACC game of 2018 when they host Wake Forest who is also winless in the conference on Saturday afternoon at the Watsco Center.

The Miami basketball team returns home after dropping their third straight game in ACC play, 68-62 at Florida State Wednesday night. The Hurricanes have started 0-3 in the ACC for the first time. Miami hadn’t started 0-3 in conference play since they were in the Big East in the 2002-03 season.

The loss to the Seminoles dropped Miami to 8-7 overall. Five of their seven losses this season have been by single digits. That includes the loss to Florida State and an 87-82 loss to North Carolina State to begin 2019 ACC Play.

Wake Forest has been blown out in each of their ACC games to begin 2019. The Demon Deacons lost 92-79 at Georgia Tech to begin conference play and were crushed 87-65 by at home on Tuesday night. Wake Forest is led by guard Brandon Childress.

Childress is averaging 16.9 points per game, 3.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists. He is an exceptional shooter. The son of Wake Forest Associate Head Coach and legend Randolph, shoots 47.4 percent from the floor, 46.8 percent on three-point attempts and makes 77.8 percent of his free throws.

Childress’ high school teammate, forward Jaylen Hoard gives Wake Forest a good one-two scoring punch between frontcourt and backcourt. Hoard averages 15.3 PPG and 7.8 RPG. He also shoots 49.1 percent from the floor and 70.8 percent from the line. Guard Chaundee Brown is the other Wake player averaging in double figures.

Sophomore point guard Chris Lykes continued his outstanding play on Wednesday night. Lykes finished with 17 points to lead Miami. Anthony Lawrence contributed 14 and Ebuka Izundu had 13 points and nine rebounds.

Wake Forest and the Miami basketball team have alternated wins in the last seven games in the series. The Hurricanes won 87-81 last season in Winston-Salem. Lykes had 13 points and five assists in last year’s win. Forward Sam Waardenburg had the best game of his Freshman season last year with 12 points against Wake.

This is a must-win for two teams seeking confidence. The Miami basketball team needs a win. It’s been a tough run for the Hurricanes team with only seven men in the rotation.

Miami has a week off before they host North Carolina next Saturday. The Tar Heels are 12-3, and 2-0 in the ACC. They host Louisville on Saturday. Miami split with North Carolina last season. The Hurricanes won on the iconic buzzer beater by Ja’quan Newton in Chapel Hill and then lost in the ACC Tournament.

North Carolina has owned the series. The Tar Heels lead 22-8 all-time.  In ACC play, North Carolina leads Miami 16-7. Following a four-game Miami winning streak against the Tar Heels, North Carolina has won four of the last six meetings.
