The Miami basketball team used the same script in a different game in a 73-53 loss at Syracuse on Thursday night. The loss drops the Hurricanes to 9-9, 1-5 in the ACC.

The Miami basketball team season is becoming like the Billy Murray movie Groundhog Day. They seem to be stuck in the same day over and over. Trailing 32-29 at halftime the Hurricanes were outscored 41-24 in the second half in losing to Syracuse. The loss continued the trend of the Hurricanes fading late and losing.

The Miami basketball team has outscored opponents 213-212 in the first half of ACC games. They have been outscored 256-209 in the second half of conference games. The Hurricanes once again dissipated in the second half in the loss to Syracuse.

Miami started off the game hot to keep it close at halftime. The Hurricanes began the game four for 10 on three-point attempts. They only made four of their next 19 to finish eight for 29 on three-point attempts at the Carrier Dome. Syracuse made 14 of their 30 attempts from beyond the arc.

Elijah Hughes, Frank Howard and Buddy Boeheim did most of the damage. That trio combined to make 12 of their 21 three-point attempts. Boeheim is the son of Syracuse’s Hall of Fame Coach Jim Boeheim. The Hurricanes stayed in the game during the first half with balanced scoring. Four players had at least five points.

Zach Johnson led the way in the opening stanza with seven. After beginning the night hot from beyond the arc, the Hurricanes made only one of their last seven three-point attempts in the first half. Miami shot 35.4 percent from the floor and 29.4 percent on threes before halftime.

Syracuse took the lead at halftime by making eight of 16 three-point attempts. Hughes was 2-4, Howard 3-4 and Boeheim 3-5 from long distance in the opening 20 minutes.

Miami stayed in the game by dominating the Orange on the Boards in the first half. The Hurricanes outrebounded Syracuse 24-12 in the first half. Miami had 16 offensive rebounds in the opening 20 minutes. Ebuka Izundu and Anthony Lawrence had four each.

Syracuse took control of the game midway through the second half with a 16-3 run. That extended their lead to 61-44. Two three-pointers by Hughes and one by Marek Dolezaj helped fuel the Orange run.

The Orange stifled Miami for most of the night. That included Hurricanes star point guard

Chris Lykes

having his worst game in almost two months. Lykes streak of ten consecutive games in double figures ended in the loss to Syracuse. The Sophomore point guard finished with eight on 4-15 from the floor and 0-8 on threes.

D.J, Vasiljevic was the only Hurricane to reach double figures in points with 11. He was 3-8 on threes and added eight rebounds. Izundu reached double figures in rebounding for the eighth time this season with ten and he scored eight points.

After the Hurricanes dominated the glass in the first half, both teams had 15 rebounds in the second half. Hughes, Boeheim and Syracuse’s leading scoring Tyus Battle all reached double figures for the Orange. Hughes had 22, Boeheim 12 and Battle scored all 10 of his points after halftime.

The Hurricanes return home for two games commencing Sunday against Florida State. The Seminoles broke a three-game losing streak on Tuesday when they defeated Clemson 77-68 at home. The three losses came after Florida State’s 68-62 win over the Hurricanes on earlier this month.
