Miami Football Surge ’19 recruiting class is not “screwed”
Rising Junior guard Navaughn Donaldson and Rising Sophomore tackle Delone Scaife provide stability to an offensive line losing three other starters. Kennedy will be the starting left tackle in 2019. If Nnoruka starts, that’s at least two starters among the new players. Not taking that into account is short-sided.
The other point that Wharton doesn’t take into account with saying that the entire roster has playing time to be had and that the addition of “a 3-star quarterback and just one 4-star receiver” is naive.” Building a roster is more than just one recruiting class. Jeremiah Payton is the four-star receiver.
Miami has three four-star receivers returning from the 2018 recruiting class, plus three-star Dee Wiggins who earned the most playing time as a Freshman. The Hurricanes also return Rising Juniors Jeff Thomas, who led Miami in receptions and receiving yards in 2018, and Mike Harley.
Graduate Transfer K.J. Osborn joins Miami from Buffalo where he was 52nd nationally in receiving yards in 2018. Osborn will almost definitely start with Thomas and Harley in 2019. The addition of new Offensive Coordinator and play caller Dan Enos should also help the Hurricanes offense in 2019.
Miami still has many holes for Diaz and his staff to fill in recruiting in 2019 and beyond. There is no question that the Surge ’19 Class is not what they wanted. It most definitely is not “screwed”. That’s why Diaz used the transfer portal to his advantage.
