Reed is tied for the third-best season in interceptions in Miami Football history and also has the fifth best season in interceptions in school history. Both players played in one Superbowl each. James lost in Super Bowl XLIII with the Arizona Cardinals and Reed won SB XLVII AKA the Harbaugh Bowl with the Ravens.

Both players were first-round draft picks in the NFL. James was the fourth pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the 1999 NFL Draft, and the first non-quarterback selected that year. Reed was the 24th selection by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2002 NFL Draft.

Prior to his NFL career, Reed was the leader of the defense on what most consider to be the best team in College Football History, the 2001 Miami Hurricanes undefeated National Championship team. He teamed up with another Miami Sports Hall of Famer, linebacker Ray Lewis on the Ravens.

Reed joined a Ravens team that had won the SuperBowl two seasons before his arrival. They didn’t win their second until his 11th season in the NFL. Reed and former Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants great, cornerback Everson Walls are the only players in NFL history to lead the league in interceptions three times.

Reed also led the NFL twice in interception return yards in a season and the longest return in a season. He broke a 43-year old NFL record with 358 interception return yards in 2004. The record has since been broken by New Orleans’ Darren Sharper during the Saints 2009 Super Bowl winning season.

Reed set the NFL record with a 108-yard interception return for a touchdown in the Ravens 36-7 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in 2008. Reed also had one of the most memorable interception returns in Miami Football history against Boston College in 2001.

James’ first two seasons in the NFL are among the best in league history. The Edge led the NFL in rushing attempts, yards, total touches and touchdowns downs as a rookie in

1999

. He earned his only first team all-pro status as a rookie and was named the

AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

He led the league again in rushing yards and yards from scrimmage in 2000. Despite never being officially named first-team All-Pro in the 2000s, James was named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Pro-Football-Reference All-Decade teams.

James was joined on the 2000s Hall of Fame All-Decade team by Lewis, Reed and other Miami Sports Hall of Famers, Warren Sapp and Devin Hester. The Pro Football Reference team had the same former Hurricanes except for Hester on their All-2000s team. They did not choose kick returners.
