The Buffalo Bills announced on Saturday afternoon that they have hired the all-time leader in Miami football history in touchdown passes Ken Dorsey to be their Quarterbacks Coach.

Ken Dorsey joins the Bills after spending nearly six weeks as an offensive assistant with Appalachian State. Many Miami football fans were upset when the Hurricanes didn’t hire Dorsey. He would likely have left Coral Gables to join the Bills.

Dorsey’s move to Buffalo from Boone, North Carolina reunites him with Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott and Director of Player Personnel Dan Morgan. Dorsey and McDermott were on the Carolina Panthers coaching staff together under Ron Rivera.

McDermott was the Defensive Coordinator with Carolina from 2011-16. Dorsey was the Panthers quarterbacks coach from 2013-17. With McDermott’s defense and Dorsey’s best pupil, quarterback Cam Newton leading the way the Panthers reached Superbowl 50, losing 24-10 to the Denver Broncos.

Dorsey and Morgan played together on the Miami football team for two seasons in 1999 and 2000. The 2000 team finished 11-1 and defeated Florida in the Sugar Bowl. The Hurricanes signal caller was in his first full season as the starter when Morgan was a Senior.

Dorsey spent five seasons in the NFL after being selected in the seventh round of the 2003 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. Dorsey grew up in the Berkley suburb of Orinda on the other side of the bay from San Francisco. After three years and ten starts with the 49ers, Dorsey spent his final two NFL seasons in Cleveland.

Dorsey started three games with the Browns in 2003. In 13 career starts, Dorsey went 2-11. He threw for 2,082 yards, eight touchdowns and 18 interceptions. Dorsey also spent one season in the Canadian Football League as a backup quarterback with the Toronto Argonauts. He retired following the 2010 season.

Dorsey became a pro scout with the Panthers in the 2011 and 12 seasons before he was hired as their quarterbacks coach for the 2013 season. Newton had some of his best seasons with Dorsey as his position coach. Newton led the NFL in touchdown percentage (TD passes per attempts) and game-winning drives in 2015.

Newton finished the 2015 season with 3,837 yards passing and 636 yards rushing. He had a career-high with 35 touchdown passes and a career low with 10 interceptions in 2015. Newton added ten touchdowns on the ground on the way to being named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player that season.

In Buffalo, Dorsey will get another chance to work with a highly drafted young quarterback. Newton was the first pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. With the Bills, Dorsey will work with Josh Allen who was the seventh pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Allen was 5-6 in 11 starts in 2018. He threw for 2,074 yards, 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 12 games. Allen’s passing game is still a work in progress. He completed52.8 percent of his passes in 2018 with a 67.9 quarterback rating. Allen had one of the greatest seasons in NFL history running the football for a rookie QB.

Allen ran for 135 yards against Miami and 101 against New York. He nearly had three straight 100 yard games on the ground. Allen had 99 yards rushing against Jacksonville week 12.
