Decisiveness hiring Manny Diaz saved Miami football future
When Richt was reportedly was told by James and the Miami Board of Trustees to fire Brown and Jon Richt he chose to resign three days later. Richt issued a statement that was posted on the CanesFootball Twitter Account at 11:59 AM ET on December 30.
The Miami Herald published Richt’s statement.
"“The University of Miami has been a part of my life for more than three decades…it shaped me as a young man and provided me with the coaching opportunity of a lifetime. My love for The U is simply great. My true desire is for our football program to return to greatness, and while terribly difficult, I feel that stepping down is in the best interests of the program. “I want to express my sincere appreciation to the entire Hurricane Family for welcoming me back home and for supporting the outstanding young men in our program. I only wish that we could have achieved greater things in return. “Katharyn and I will be cheering on the Canes in the years to come, and The U will never leave our hearts.’’"
It took James only 11 hours to name Diaz the new Head Coach. Diaz accepted his dream job immediately. James had to act fast. Diaz had been hired by Temple only 18 days prior to Richt’s resignation. There was the issue of a $4 million buyout to work through.
Less than 90 minutes after Mark Richt’ announcement the Mother Of Junior running back, Travis Homer announced that he signed with an agent and was entering the NFL Draft. Homer led Miami in rushing yards the last two seasons and finished less than 50 yards shy of 1,000 yards on the ground each season.
James held a 3:30 PM news conference on the 30th to discuss Richt’s resignation. Diaz was spotted at the Hecht Center by the Miami Herald and other media where James’ office is. The Miami Athletic Director was questioned about Diaz. He was very coy in his response.
"“Manny Diaz? I don’t have any comment on Manny. I guess Manny is on his own schedule.’’"
At that point, the likelihood is that James wasn’t sure what the outcome was going to be with the author of the turnover chain.
