According to multiple reports, the Miami football program will hire Andy Vaughn from the University of Arizona football program as the new Director of Player Personnel.

Andy Vaughn comes joins the Miami football program as the Director of Football Recruiting at the University of Arizona. Vaughn was part of Kevin Sumlin’s first staff in Tucson. Andrew Ivins of Inside the U was the first to break the story. Vaughn will replace Matt Doherty who was fired last month.

Manny Diaz fired most of the Hurricanes recruiting staff last month shortly after National Signing Day. Miami finished a very disappointing 28th in the 247Sports Composite recruiting rankings. The Hurricanes have been able to upgrade the Miami football roster by signing six transfers since Diaz was hired on December 30.

Vaughn was hired as the Senior director of recruiting and high school relations at Arizona last June. The Wildcats, who are known more for their basketball program, finished with the nation’s 56th ranked recruiting class in 2019.

Before he worked at Arizona, per Ivins, Vaughn also spent time on the staffs at Nebraska for three years, Nevada (2012-15), Middle Tennessee State (2008-12) and Clemson (2003-06). Diaz and Vaughn’s reigns at Middle Tennessee State overlapped for the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

Vaughn joined the Arizona staff after being let go at Nebraska when Scott Frost was hired to be the head coach at his alma mater succeeding Mike Riley. Vaughn’s experience in college football has primarily been in recruiting departments and in player personnel.

Michael Lev of Tucson.Com highlighted Vaughn’s experience prior to joining the Wildcats staff. Under Riley, Vaughn was Nebraska’s director of football and recruiting operations.

Vaughn has worked with the sons of Hall of Fame NFL Executive Bill Polian. He worked with former Nevada Coach Brian and Arizona associate athletic director for football, Dennis. Brian succeeded Nevada legend Chris Ault as Head Coach. Ault created the Pistol offense that is an offshoot of the spread.

Vaughn is expected to work with David Cooney and DeMarcus VanDyke on the Hurricanes recruiting staff. Cooney and VanDyke are both expected to be promoted from quality control analyst positions in the past. VanDyke is a former Miami defensive back.

Cooney is expected to be promoted to Director of Recruiting after having previously been a quality control analyst of the offense. VanDyke is expected to be elevated to Assistant Director of Recruiting after serving as the quality control analyst of the defense.

Vaughn might find some familiar faces on the Miami roster. While at Nebraska Vaughn helped the Cornhuskers sign four-star wide receiver Tyjon Lindsey from Las Vegas Bishop Gorman. Lindsay was a high school teammate of current Miami quarterback Tate Martell, tight end Brevin Jordan and safety Bubba Bolden.

Vaughn’s move from Southern Arizona to South Florida brings him closer to his native South Carolina. His experience mining high school talent for Middle Tennessee State and Clemson should help Miami. His time with Nevada and Arizona should also help the Hurricanes in recruiting players from the West Coast.
