Miami basketball at Virginia Tech for 2018-19 regular season finale

The Miami basketball team ends their adversity-filled regular season at Virginia Tech Friday night. The Hurricanes defeated Pittsburgh in their home finale Tuesday.

The Miami basketball team and Virginia Tech are the only ACC game Friday night. The rest of the conference concludes the regular season on Saturday, A loss would mean the Hurricanes worst record in the ACC since 2010. Miami is almost definitely assured of their first losing season since 2007.

Virginia Tech enters Friday’s game 22-7, their best regular-season record since the Hokies went 23-6 in 1996. A win by Virginia Tech would give them their best ACC record since joining the conference in 2004-05.

Miami holds the all-time edge in the series against Virginia Tech 22-17, All of the meetings have been since the 2000-01 season when both teams were in the Big East. Since they joined the ACC together, the Hurricanes hold a 16-14 advantage.

The Hokies won eight of the first ten meetings in the ACC. Miami is 14-6 against Virginia Tech since then. The Hokies won 82-70 in Coral Gables in January. Miami won 84-75 last season in Blacksburg.

Miami Senior forward

Anthony Lawrence

is coming off of a career-high 27 points in his last game at the Watsco Center. He also added 11 rebounds. Lawrence was spectacular in Blacksburg last season. The Senior forward had 25 points and 13 rebounds in the Hurricanes victory at Cassell Coliseum in 2018.

The trio of Nickeil Alexander-Walker. Ahmad Hill and Justin Robinson did most of scoring for Virginia Tech in their January victory at the Watsco Center. Alexander-Walker had 25, Hill 19 and Robinson 17.

While a Friday night game is unusual for major college basketball it will allow Miami and Virginia Tech to have the eyes of the nation on them from Cassell Coliseum. Several conference tournaments, the Ivy League and the Mid-American conference highlight the rest of the Friday night schedule.

Miami is currently 12th in the ACC. They can finish as high as 10th or as low as 13th in the Final ACC Standings. The Hurricanes will play their first game in the ACC Tournament on Tuesday. The matchups and times will be announced following Saturday’s final day of play in the regular season.

A loss on Friday night ensures the most losses for the Hurricanes in ACC play during a season. They had 12 ACC losses in 2007 and 2010. The ’08 and ’10 seasons also set the record for futility in the ACC by a Hurricanes team by finishing 12th. This year has been one filled with attrition from the Miami roster.
