Miami Hurricanes pro day gave the chance for nearly a dozen NFL bound UM players to show what they can do in front of NFL scouts. Some of the players surprised with their performances.

Six of the Miami Hurricanes football alums got another chance to show their talents after competing at the NFL combine in early March. Several others got their first and potentially only chance to work out in front of the NFL scouts.

The most impressive player on Monday was Miami running back Trayone Gray. Gray ran a 4.37 40-yard dash according to Sun Sentinel Miami Hurricanes beat writer Christy Chirinos. Gray primarily played fullback in 2018. He did not get many carries. He played 29 games in his Miami career. That included all 13 as a Senior in 2018.

Gray was stuck behind Mark Walton, Travis Homer and DeeJay Dallas during his Miami career. He finished his Hurricanes career with 60 carries for 294 yards and five touchdowns and added six receptions for 54 yards. Gray was the starting fullback for the Hurricanes in 2018. He told reporters he was able to run the 40 at 233 pounds

Gray added that he is comfortable playing running back or fullback in the NFL. Gray could be the next former Hurricanes running back to achieve more in the NFL than in college. Gus Edwards came on strong at the end of 2018 for the Baltimore Ravens. Edwards play helped the Ravens reach the playoffs.

Jaquan Johnson is going to have to earn a spot in the NFL on his performance on the field in college. Chirinos reported that Johnson ran a 4.77 and a 4.79 in the 40. That’s not likely to impress NFL scouts. Johnson is undersized at 5’10 191 pounds.
