Navaughn Donaldson who has been the starting right guard for most of the last two seasons has taken Gaynor’s place at center. That caused a lot of moving around on the offensive line. Delone Scaife who was moved earlier this spring from right to left tackle was then moved to guard.
Barry and Enos are still trying to figure out who will play where. Donaldson, Gaynor and Scaife are close to definites as starters. After that, it’s wide open. Enos spoke earlier this week about an offensive line still coming together.
"“We’ve been very inconsistent [on] the offensive line. We’ve been shuffling guys in and out of there. We’ve had some injuries. We had to move guard Donaldson to center on Saturday. He hasn’t played center all spring, but he did a tremendous job moving to center for us to allow us to scrimmage. But really there’s been no continuity, because we’ve just been trying to figure out who’s who. Who’s the guard, who’s the tackle, who’s the starter, who’s the 2? You with me? It’s been hard that way."
Freshman Zion Nelson who should still be in high school played left tackle during last Saturday’s first scrimmage that was close to the media and public. Rising redshirt sophomores Kai-Leon Herbert and Zalon’tae Hillery have yet to live up to their four-star status when they signed in 2018.
Rising redshirt freshman John Campbell is thought to be the front runner to be the starter at right tackle. That leaves right guard as the one position without a favorite to start. It figures to be between Nelson, Herbert and Hillery.
Graduate transfer Tommy Kennedy who was initially expected to be the left tackle will now compete for playing time at guard and backup Gaynor at center. Getting the offensive line figured out is the biggest challenge for Diaz and Enos. Barry came to Miami from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the players like his system.
