The draft is a complex process and a lot goes into who a team picks. It’s also very subjective. The NFL is a whole other level from college football besides what is on the field. It is a business.
Nailing the “job interview” is just as important as the player’s performance on the field and the measurables at the combine. A lot is at stake for the front offices and the players who are drafted. Willis being undrafted could wind up benefitting him in the future. He joins a Ravens team without a lot of depth at defensive tackle.
Willis’ father clearly understands what has happened and has the right attitude about Gerald III’s future. What happened over the weekend is over and it’s time to move on and focus on doing everything possible to get in position to make the Ravens. Baltimore also drafted DT Davion Mack from Texas A&M in the fifth round.
Willis is going from a 4-3 to a 3-4. That’s a switch from defensive tackle to nose tackle. Brandon Williams started all 16 games for the Ravens at NT last season. Williams is the only defensive tackle currently listed on the Ravens depth chart. That gives both Mack and Willis a chance to each roster spots with the Ravens.
