Four Miami football players, one basketball among eight Hall of Fame inductees
Four Miami football players and one each in basketball, baseball and women’s athletes in rowing and track and field are the eight inductees into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 2019.
The Miami football players are former Hurricanes cornerback Antrel Rolle (2001-2004), defensive tackles Vince Wilfork (’01-’03), running back Stephen McGuire (’89-’92) and linebacker Scott Nicolas (’78-1981).
Center Constantin Popa is the basketball inductee, pitcher Cesar Carrillo (’04-’05) track and field star Tabia Charles Collins (’04-’06); and rower Dr. Jenny Krawec (’01-’04) are the other inductees in 2019. The 2019 Class is the 53rd in the history of the UM Sports Hall of Fame.
Nicholas’ induction is long overdue. He led the Miami football team in tackles in his final three seasons with the Hurricanes. Nicolas set the Hurricanes record for tackles for a career and a single game with 26 against Penn State in 1979. The single-game record still stands. Nicolas played six NFL seasons with Cleveland and Miami.
McGuire was a bruising fullback/running back for Miami during the glory years of the eighties and early nineties. He left Miami as the second leading rusher in school history. He has since dropped to 14th. McGuire’s 35 rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns still rank at the top of Hurricanes annals.
McGuire is alone atop the Hurricanes record books in rushing touchdowns and tied with Edgerrin James for total touchdowns. He played on the 1989 and ’91 Miami National Championship teams. McGuire led Miami in rushing touchdowns his first three years in college and in rushing yards in 1989 and 90.
Following his career at Miami, McGuire became a police officer in his hometown of New York City. McGuire’s former teammate Randall Hill is also among the former Miami football players in law enforcement.
