Four Miami football players, one basketball among eight Hall of Fame inductees
Constantin Popa led the Miami basketball team in rebounding and blocked shots all four of his seasons with the Hurricanes. He has three of the top ten games in blocked shots in Miami history. Popa also has three of the top ten seasons in Miami history in blocked shots. Popa’s 85 blocks in 1993 stood as the record until 2005.
The 7’3 center is the tallest player in Miami basketball history. Popa ranks sixth all-time in field goal percentage and first in blocked shots with 263 (39 more than second place Tim James). Popa was the 53rd selection overall in the second round of the 1994 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers.
The native of Romania played six years of professional basketball in France and Israel. Popa was the head coach of the University of Indianapolis women’s team from 2011-16.
Tabia Charles Collins was a 10-time All-American in the Long Jump and Triple Jump as a member of the Miami Hurricanes Track Field Team from 2004-06. Charles Collins graduated from Miami in three years and was a member of the 2008 Canadian Olympic team. Competing in Beijing she finished 10th in the long jump.
A native of Ontario like Charles Collins, Krawec is the first rower to be inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame. Rowing is a family sport for the Krawecs. Krawec’s father Walt was a member of the 1976 Canadian Olympic team. He competed in his home country at the Montreal Olympics.
Krawec’s sister Bethany also rowed at Miami. Doctor Krawec was a second-team All-American rower in 2003 and ’04 in the Varsity Eight. Krawec is currently a professor in the Miami Education department. She has Masters and Doctorate Degrees in Special education from the University of Miami.
