Yonder Alonso is an incredible story. Yonder’s father Luis played in the Cuban Major League, the National Series. When Alonso was nine years old his family defected from Cuban to Miami. Alonso graduated from Coral Gables high school. He became a two-time all-state player for the Cavaliers.

The first baseman was selected in the 16th round in the MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins but chose to play for the Miami baseball team. Alonso had an amazing freshman season for Jim Morris and the Hurricanes. He hit .295 with 10 home runs and 69 RBIs. Alonso nearly obliterated those numbers as a sophomore.

The Cuban native hit .376 with 18 home runs and 74 RBIs to lead Miami in all three categories. The 18 long balls led the ACC. Alonso amazingly once again improved his HRs as a junior. He hit .370 with 24 and 74 to earn consensus all-American honors. The 24 HRs are second for a season in Miami history.

Alonso is third in Miami baseball history in career home runs with 52, third in RBIs with 215, fourth in walks with 172 and tied for fifth in slugging percentage at .637.  Alonso’s 2008 season put him second in school history with 76 walks and .777 slugging percentage in one year.

Alonso was drafted in the first round by the Cincinnati Reds with the seventh overall pick in the 2008 MLB Draft. He has played for the Reds, San Diego Padres, Oakland A’s, Seattle Mariners, Cleveland Indians and is currently on the Chicago White Sox with another Cuban first baseman Jorge Abreu.
