Charles Johnson was an outstanding two way player for the Miami baseball team. He was an outstanding defensive catcher and led the Hurricanes in home runs all three of his seasons in Coral Gables.
Johnson has the school record with nine triples in a season, is fifth in Miami history with 12 triples in his career and his 38 home runs are ninth in Miami history. The two-time all-star catcher chose to play baseball at Miami despite being the 10th overall pick in the first round by the Montreal Expos in the 1989 MLB Draft.
Johnson would enter the draft again in 1992 as a junior and was the 28th overall selection by the Florida Marlins with their first ever draft pick. He made his major league debut two years later.
Jemile Weeks is the Miami baseball program’s all-time leader with 19 triples and he is eighth in runs scored. Weeks was a consensus all-American in 2008 before becoming a first-round draft pick of the Oakland A’s. The A’s selected Weeks 12th overall.
Weeks was a key player in Miami winning their first ACC baseball championship in 2008. The second baseman made his major league debut with Oakland in 2011. The younger brother of former major leaguer Rickie Weeks, Jemile hit .303 with 26 doubles, eight triples, two home runs, 26 RBIs and 22 stolen bases.
Weeks played six seasons in the Major Leagues with the A’s, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles and San Diego Padres. Weeks was the American League Rookie of the Month in June 2011.
