New Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Dan Enos described himself as being very demanding on his players. He expects them to be meticulous and aware of their mistakes.

The QB play for the Miami Hurricanes was inefficient and anything but meticulous in 2018. Miami’s QB stats were in the bottom quarter of FBS in nearly every category. Former head coach and offensive play-caller Mark Richt spoke repeatedly about the importance of the Hurricanes taking care of the football.

Returning part-time starting QB N’Kosi Perry did that well with a 13-6 touchdown to interception ratio. The Hurricanes finished 102nd nationally with 14 interceptions thrown. Miami’s 51.1 percent completion rate was atrocious in the era of pass-happy offenses with high efficiency and short, quick routes.

Upgrading the play at QB is high on Diaz’s priority list for what he has dubbed “The New Miami” that has turned into a rallying cry throughout Hurricanes nation. Enos has been assigned the task of overseeing the Miami offense. Enos’ responsibility is similar to how Diaz was given the commitment of running the defense under Richt.

The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson spoke to Enos and quoted some of what he talked about at a luncheon in Pinehurst last week. Enos spoke about his demanding ways, his message to his players, the secret to success and what his players need to do to get there.

"“They’re all getting accustomed to how I coach them…I’m very demanding and I confront and demand [and that] is my style. I confront them to do it correctly all the time and I don’t take a play off because that’s not fair to them. All three [quarterbacks] are getting used to the style and buying in.Sometimes I tell them, ‘Don’t listen to the tone; listen to the message.’ They’ve been doing that. Part of the reason I tell them I coach them very hard is to make the games easier, so they are used to practicing with a high level sense of urgency and practicing with game type plays. The secret to a person’s success lies in their daily agenda. I constantly tell our players: What is your goal athletically, academically, socially? What do you want to accomplish?First you have to define that as a young person or as an old [50-year-old] coach like me. Then, I tell them, every day when you go to sleep, look to see what you did. What did I do today to help me accomplish those goals?I want to be starting quarterback at The U, for example. When you go to bed at night, what did you do today to accomplish that goal? People ask, ‘How do you do deal with the stress?’ There’s not any pressure and not any stress if you’re prepared.I tell our players there’s nothing to ever worry about, nothing to ever be stressed about as long as you’re prepared. And I teach them how to prepare; that’s part of my job. And [tell them] what the expectation levels are every day when they come to practice.”"

The new coaching staff reflects Diaz’s style. He’s blunt, aggressive and demanding. Diaz also emphasizes fun. Enos fits all those traits, except is more intense than Diaz and might not emphasize fun as much. The New Miami offensive guru has been successful with QBs throughout his coaching career.

Jackson mentioned that every starting QB Enos has coached have seen tremendous improvement in their completion percentages. That would be a boon for the Miami Hurricanes offense. In addition to bringing the Hurricanes offensive style into the 21st century improving the QBs accuracy in 2019 will be critical for Miami.
