CBS Sports ranked all 129 teams in FBS. Miami fell 12 spots from their previous ranking to 54th in FBS. The rankings were updated on May 10. It is difficult to tell what CBS based their rankings on. Fourteen Group of Five schools are ranked ahead of the Miami football team. Appalachian State and Temple are among that group.
Despite Miami’s tumble in 2018 some of these schools being ranked ahead of the Hurricanes is a farce. Miami won at Appalachian State 45-10 in 2016. The game might have been three years ago, but the Mountaineers have a new coach and the result would not be much different even if the game was played in Boone, NC again.
Diaz bolting from Temple after 18 days as their head coach tells you all you need to know about the difference between the programs. Other programs ahead of Miami are Buffalo, Georgia Southern, Troy and UAB. Miami graduate transfer wide receiver K.J. Osborn transferred to Coral Gables from Buffalo.
All of those teams ranked ahead of the Hurricanes if questionable if not irresponsible. Miami has been the epitome of mediocrity for nearly 20 years. They have owned Group of Five and FCS opponents. The Hurricanes have a five-game winning streak against Group of Five teams.
Miami’s last loss to a team from a non-power five conference was to Cincinnati in 2015. The winning streak doesn’t include FCS teams who the Hurricanes have blown out in every instance the three seasons.
