The competition to be the Miami Hurricanes starting quarterback is expected to last well into training camp in August. All three QBs have shown leadership ability during the 2019 offseason.

Tate Martell, N’Kosi Perry and Jarren Williams have all spent time organizing seven-on-seven drills for the Miami Hurricanes this spring as discussed by tight end Will Mallory during an appearance on Tuesday.

The importance of taking charge and being a leader at QB cannot be understated. Coaches are limited in their time with the players during the offseason. Hard work that needs to be put in during the offseason has to come from the players’ peers. All three Miami QBs have taken initiative following spring football.

Miami head coach Manny Diaz and offensive coordinator Dan Enos have frequently stated during the offseason the importance of each of the Miami Hurricanes QBs taking the initiative showing leadership during the offseason to emerge as the first team QB in August. Mallory is one player who has taken notice.

The rising sophomore from Jacksonville spoke at length during an appearance on Tuesday about the hard work he and his teammates are putting in during the offseason. Mallory elaborated on the initiative each of the Hurricanes signal callers has taken to get players on the practice field to work together.

"“Honestly, all of them [have been calling us to go throw and catch]. It’s not been one single guy. They’re all doing a great job of working together in 7-on-7s. They’re doing a great job, all of them with the scripts and running it and making sure we’re all on point. It’s still pretty early, but they’re all doing a great job so far. … In my lift group, I’m with most of [the quarterbacks], so I get to be around them a lot. We’re close friends with all of them, so we’re pretty much around every single one of them all day. They’re all doing a good job and we’re excited for them.Everyone’s pushing each other and it’s good to have people pushing you and make it a competition. That’s how everyone gets better. It’s huge for them and it’s also huge for the tight end group, too. We have a bunch of good players that are pushing each other. It’s going to be a good summer for us.”"

Quarterback is one of the biggest question marks for the Miami Hurricanes football team heading into the 2019 season. The only bigger question is the offensive line. Tight end with Mallory, his classmate, returning starter Brevin Jordan and rising redshirt junior Michael Irvin should be a strength.

The inexperience of the Miami QBs provides a lot of questions until the August 24 season opener against Florida. Perry is the only QB on the Miami roster that has started a game in his collegiate career. Perry’s 2018 season was a disappointment. The Hurricanes need consistent play at QB in 2019 to be successful.

The play Miami received at QB in 2018 was inconsistent at best. Perry with the graduated Malik Rosier shares the blame. Perry looked the best during the spring, but there is a long way to go to training camp and earning the starting job. Martell and Williams will push him. All three are even heading to August.
