The next great quarterback to tight end tandem for the Miami football program might have been created at Paradise Camp this weekend. Several media outlets raved about the connection between 2020 four-star QB Tyler VanDyke and five-star TE Darnell Washington.

Darnell Washington is the top tight end in the Class of 2020. Like current Miami tight end Brevin Jordan, quarterback Tate Martell and safety Bubba Bolden, Washington attends high school in Las Vegas at Desert Pines. The current Miami football triumvirate attended Bishop Gorman.

Tyler VanDyke was one of the stars of Paradise Camp weekend for the Miami football program. He has been repeatedly praised by nearly every media outlet that covers the Hurricanes. VanDyke was exceptional in seven-on-seven drills according to David Wilson of the Miami Herald.

VanDyke completed all eight of his passing attempts. Many of those went to Washington. The entirety of Miami football followers can cautiously hope that the VanDyke to Washington tandem is part of the Hurricanes future and not just Paradise Camp lore.

Andrew Ivins of Inside the U reported that Washington is expected to return for an official visit this winter. Ivins also reported that Washington is expected to have dinner with tight ends coach Stephen Field before returning home to Las Vegas. VanDyke was encouraged by the chemistry with Washington.

"“Last night and today with Darnell, just making good connections with him. I was talking to him a lot after the plays. I’m going to see him next week, so I’m just going to keep talking to him, texting him because I think we need him.”"

David Furones of the Sun-Sentinel did a great job retrieving thoughts from VanDyke and Washington about their futures. Getting Washington would be a huge coup for the Hurricanes seventh-rated 2020 recruiting class. He is an imposing player at 6’8 250 pounds according to Ivins.

Washington was equally impressed by VanDyke’s field presence and football IQ. If no one emerges from the current QB unit VanDyke will have an excellent chance to start as a true freshman for the Hurricanes in 2020. The last true freshman QB to start for Miami was Brad Kaaya in 2014. Kaaya became Miami’s all-time leading passer.

Malik Rosier in 2015 and N’Kosi Perry last season stated games as redshirt freshmen. VanDyke is already proving to be a leader by working on getting Washington to commit to Miami. Washington told Furones about his relationships with VanDyke and Field, and his discussion with Jordan about playing at Miami.

"“We’re just starting to build this relationship. He’s a good quarterback (VanDyke). He knows how to put it on the money. He’s a smart quarterback, has a high IQ. We were just talking about coming here, pretty much recruiting.Coach Field, man, he’s a good guy. He’s relaxed. He just wants to talk to me about anything and everything. We’ve got that vibe. “He (Jordan) told me how much he likes it here, how they use him, how coach Field is. He said good things about coach Field,”"

Signing Washington would be a huge coup for the 2020 Miami recruiting class. It would be the second time in three seasons that the top tight end in the class signed with Miami. Jordan was the top tight end in 2018. Signing Washingon from Las Vegas over Pac-12 and Big XII schools plus Alabama or Clemson would be impressive.
