Tyler VanDyke could challenge to be Miami Hurricanes 2020 starting QB

After an impressive performance at Paradise camp this weekend, 2020 QB Tyler Van Dyke looks ready to challenge to be the Miami Hurricanes starting quarterback as a true freshman.

Tyler VanDyke showed during Paradise Camp this weekend why recruiting experts are so high on him in the class of 2020. Getting VanDyke to commit to the Miami Hurricanes out of Connecticut was a big coup. VanDyke has the combination of size, accuracy and arm strength that none of the QBs currently on the Miami roster has.

The Miami Hurricanes’ 2019 season opener against Florida in Orlando is exactly two months away. The battle to be under center will likely go on as long as Manny Diaz and Dan Enos feel comfortable balancing being sure they have the right QB and being able to prepare him in time for Florida.

VanDyke is 6-4 212 pounds. He wowed observers at Paradise Camp with his big accurate arm. N’Kosi Perry who is 6-4 but only 185 pounds has a big arm but is wildly inaccurate. Perry completed just 50.8 percent of his passes as a redshirt freshman in 2018. That was worse than Malik Rosier‘s 52.6 percent.

Rising redshirt freshman Jarren Williams completed only one pass in three attempts against Savannah State. Williams is known more for his accuracy than Perry or Tate Martell are. Martell is the best athlete and runner of the three QBs entering fall practice.

VanDyke was exceptional in seven-on-seven drills at Paradise Camp as he built a rapport with five-star tight end Darnell Washington out of Las Vegas. VanDyke completed all eight of his attempts in the seven-on-seven drills at Paradise Camp this weekend. Several of those completions went to Washington.

The connection between VanDyke and Washington has many In the Miami Hurricanes community excited about the possibility of those two playing together for at least three seasons. Being a starting quarterback as a true freshman is a difficult feat if your name is not Trevor Lawrence.

Miami has not started a true freshman QB since Brad Kaaya earned the job in 2014. Kaaya was the starting QB for the next three seasons. He went on to one of the most successful careers in Miami Hurricanes history. Kaaya left UM as the program’s all-time leading passer.

David Wilson of the Miami Herald perfectly summarized VanDyke’s memorable performance this weekend. VanDyke’s play in Coral Gables will set the standard at QB for future Paradise Camps.

Van Dyke plans to enroll at Miami in January. That will set up interesting spring practices for Van Dyke the returning QBs. One or potentially two of the Hurricanes QBs could transfer sometime in 2019 or early 2020. VanDyke is emerging as a leader in the 2020 recruiting class, as the QB should be.

He has taken the reigns of pitching Miami to other recruits considering the Hurricanes. VanDyke has shut down his recruitment and called Miami home. QBU could be revived under VanDyke or one of the signal callers currently on the roster.
