In a post published on Saturday morning, Miami Hurricanes beat reporter Manny Navarro of The Athletic stated he expects offensive coordinator Dan Enos to decide on a starting quarterback at least two weeks before the season opener against Florida August 24.

The indecision at quarterback was one of the downfalls for the Miami Hurricanes in 2018. Neither graduated Malik Rosier or rising redshirt sophomore N’Kosi Perry instilled confidence in anyone close to the Hurricanes. In a question and answer session with fans, Navarro was asked when Dan Enos could make a QB decision.

Enos is entering his first season as the Miami offensive coordinator after spending the 2018 season as the QB coach at Alabama. Manny Diaz and the Miami football program prevailed over the Crimson Tide, Georgia and others to hire Enos. He is known as a QB guru. The Miami Hurricanes are desperate to improve their QB play.

The Hurricanes passing game has been abysmal the last two seasons. That culminated with being ranked in the bottom quarter in nearly every passing category in FBS in 2019. The blame goes across the board. It’s not only on Malik Rosier, Mark Richt. his son Jon, the former QB coach or Perry.

Navarro expects Enos to narrow the QB race to two about a week into training camp with the starting QB decided about two weeks before the August 24 season opener against Florida.

The likely third string QB is rising redshirt freshman Jarren Williams. If that happens keep on eye on Williams considering transferring. In the days leading up to Miami’s Pinstripe Bowl loss to Wisconsin, reports leaked that Williams was transferring. Jon Richt reportedly talked him out of it.

Perry has the best performance during spring football. Ohio State transfer Tate Martell is the first QB recruited to Miami by Enos and his new offensive coaching staff.

The question proposed to Navarro asked what the timeline deciding who the starting QB will be. No matter who starts against Florida it would be surprising for any of the Miami QBs to be the sole starter throughout the 2019 season.

"“I’m interested in what you think the timeline will be for the QB competition. Do you think offensive coordinator Dan Enos will narrow it down to two guys at some point before naming the starter? Do you think the eventual starter will have a few weeks of starter’s reps before UF, or could this go down to the wire? – Mike J.I don’t think this goes down to the wire at all. If it does, Enos is bringing bigger problems upon himself, and he’s too smart for that. He told me at a private event right after the end of spring football he was going to pare the battle down to two QBs very quickly.I fully expect that to happen within the first week of camp — even if they don’t tell the media. After that, I’d expect it to really become settled with two weeks to go before kickoff. At that point, the starter could get two full weeks to prepare. In the end, I think N’Kosi Perry starts against Florida.By all accounts, he’s been on his best behavior this summer and he won the QB award this spring. It’s his job to lose in my opinion.”"

Quarterback is critical to the success of any football team. Getting QB figured out for the Miami football program after the uncertainty of 2018 and the lack of one asserting himself this spring ie essential. The success of the Hurricanes in 2019 is going to largely be determined on the play they get at QB.
