How will the secondary be rebuilt?

Junior cornerback Trajan Bandy is the only returning starter in the Miami Hurricanes secondary. He will have to lead a group of young and inexperienced defensive backs for the Miami football team. None of the eight players through the transfer portal brought a needed and experienced upperclassman in the secondary.

The Hurricanes did add safety Bubba Bolden from USC who is entering his redshirt sophomore season. Bolden was suspended from attending USC last season. He has not played football since making eight tackles as a freshman for the Trojans in 2017. Bolden will likely battle with Gurvan Hall to start next to Amari Carter.

The spot across from Bandy at CB is wide open. Sophomores Al Blades and D.J. Ivey are the front runners to replace Michael Jackson at the other CB spot. redshirt freshman Nigel Bethel and freshmen Te’Cory Couch and Christian Williams will all challenge to be a part of the Hurricanes rotation at CB.

The 2019 secondary marks the second time in three years that Manny Diaz, safeties coach and now co-defensive coordinator Ephraim Banda and cornerbacks coach Mike Rumph will have to rebuild the secondary. The Hurricanes had the best pass defense in the country last season., Repeating that will be difficult in 2019.
