As the Miami Hurricanes begin training camp on Friday a plethora of players are competing to be starters at numerous positions other than Quarterback.

The position that most that follow the Miami Hurricanes to know about are who will be the starting quarterback. That is obvious. Tate Martell, N’Kosi Perry and Jarren Williams are all in the running as the Hurricanes commence training camp Friday night. There are numerous other open positions as Miami begins practice.

Position battles on the offensive line, at defensive tackle and in the secondary will all commence when the Miami Hurricanes football team gathers Friday night for their first practice of training camp. The Miami football program gets to begin practice a week earlier than most of college football.

The Hurricanes open the season against Florida on August 24. That is a week earlier than the majority of college football. The Hurricanes, Gators, Arizona and Hawaii begin play during what is referred to as week zero. The rest of college football commences their 2019 season the following weekend.

Manny Diaz and new offensive coordinator and QB coach Dan Enos have a lot of questions entering training camp beyond who will be under center against Florida. The Miami offensive line dealt with inconsistency and ineffectiveness during Mark Richt’s three-season tenure coaching the Hurricanes.

Getting the offensive line settled for the 2019 season is critical to getting good play at QB. If Miami does not stabilize the offensive line, the quarterback might not matter. The Hurricanes have been good in pass blocking the last three seasons. The inconsistencies have come in pass protection.

A new season with Manny Diaz has a lot of room for optimism this fall. The competition that will go on during training camp will give us a good idea what to expect against Florida and throughout the 2019 season.
