The naming of redshirt freshman Jarren Williams as the Miami Hurricanes starting quarterback caught many by surprise. USA Today appears to be the most shocked of the major media outlets.

In a story published on August 6, USA Today College Football writer Paul Myerberg proclaimed the Miami Hurricanes quarterback competition as the biggest in training camp across the nation. In summarizing the Miami QB competition Myerberg only analyzed redshirt sophomores, N’Kosi Perry and Tate Martell.

Many “experts” across the nation figured this to be the same. Martell got a lot of backlash nationally from ignorant fans and media members who just expected him to be handed the job. Miami Hurricanes head coach Manny Diaz and The New Miami offensive coordinator Dan Enos lived up to providing an open competition.

Many would qualify Diaz and Enos stating an open QB competition merely as coach’s speak. They lived up to their word. Multiple reports were fled via social media and in articles that Jaren Williams was the most impressive of the three Hurricanes QBs competing to be the starting QB this fall. Myerberg was not confident in Miami’s QBs.

"“1. Miami (Fla.)Contenders: Tate Martell (So.), N’Kosi Perry (So.)There’s talent here but not enough experience to provide optimism: Martell played in six games at Oho State before transferring and Perry was frustratingly uneven when thrust into the lineup as a freshman. The good news stems from the arrival of new offensive coordinator Dan Enos, who has developed a reputation for getting the most out of his quarterback room…That doesn’t outweigh the concerns over the Hurricanes’ lack of a proven option and the short time frame before a marquee matchup with Florida to open the 2019 season.”"

The lack of a proven option at QB also applies to Williams. He took only nine snaps and completed one pass in three attempts last season. That all came in a 77-0 Miami victory against FCS Savannah State. The Tigers moved down to Division II this season.

Wiliams is far more accurate passer than Martell or Perry. The reports throughout the offseason were that Williams has a much higher ceiling and potential to make the NFL than either Martell or Perry do.

The decision by Enos and Diaz to name Williams starter was the correct one. Williams will be given every opportunity to succeed. Expect Williams to play the entire season opener against Florida barring an injury or complete catastrophic play.

Following the game against the Gators, Miami is fortunate to have a week off when most of college football is opening the regular season. The week off will provide Enos and Diaz a chance to work with Williams on his play against Florida before playing at North Carolina September 7. Ed. Note. We know the picture is Brad Kaaya.
