The first start of Jarren Williams’ collegiate career compared favorably with other Miami Hurricanes quarterbacks who have made their debuts since 2003.

Jarren Williams began his first start for the Miami Hurricanes by completing 12 passes in 14 attempts for 158 yards and a touchdown in the first half on Saturday. Florida slowed Williams down in the second half to earn a 24-20 season-opening win in Orlando. Williams finished 19-29 for 214 yards a TD and no interceptions.

The first extensive playing time of Williams career was encouraging in his first start. Williams only playing time as a true freshman in 2018 was against then FCS Savannah State in a 77-0 Miami Hurricanes victory. Williams was 1-3 for 17 yards and added two carries for two yards and a TD in the demolition of the Tigers.

The first start and significant playing time of Williams career compared favorably with other Miami QBs in the 21st century. The first QB of the post Ken Dorsey era at Miami was Brock Berlin. Berlin was at Florida in 2000 and 2001 before he transferred to Miami. Berlin sat out in 2002 before becoming eligible in 2003.

Berlin played in 11 games at Florida. In that era that was equivalent of an entire season. It isn’t fair to Williams to compare the two. Following Berlin’s two-year stint as the Miami Hurricanes signal-caller, Kyle Wright was the main QB for Miami in 2005.

Wright had limited snaps in 2004 before becoming the starter for the 2005 opener against Florida State. Wright’s stats were similar to Williams in a game Miami should have won. The Hurricanes outgained the Seminoles 313 to 170, had 21 first downs to FSU’s nine. Like Williams Saturday, Wright received poor protection.
