Florida State racked up nine sacks, a total that Florida exceeded by on Saturday night, and received key special teams plays to win 10-7. Except for the much lower score, the game against FSU in 2005 felt similar in many ways to Saturday’s game against Florida. Wright would settle in as Miami’s starting QB from 2005-07.

In Randy Shannon’s second year as head coach, the Hurricanes had a pair of freshmen QBs share time. Robert Marve and Jacory Harris both entered Miami with high expectations. Harris received the start for Miami in the season opener against FCS Charleston Southern. He was 16-26 for 196 yards, one TD and no interceptions.

Harris’ numbers were close to what Williams accomplished on Saturday night against Florida but against a far inferior opponent. The Buccaneers finished 7-5 in 2008, but their level of competition is clearly far worse than Florida. Miami crushed Charleston Southern 52-7. Marve made his debut a week later against Florida, ironically.

The Gators 26-3 win was their only one over Miami since 1985 until their win on Saturday night. Mavre was unable to move the Hurricanes throughout the game. Mavre finished an uninspiring 10-18 for 69 yards without a TD or an interception. The Hurricanes finished with 140 total yards and 11 first downs.

The 2009 season would feature shuffling between Harris and Mavre at QB. It felt similar to Mark Richt using N’Kosi Perry and Malik Rosier in 2018. The difference was that Harris and Marve were both freshmen. Perry was a redshirt freshman in 2018, Rosier a redshirt senior. Miami finished 2008 7-6 and lost the Emerald Bowl to Cal.
