Manny Diaz and Dan Enos pushing Miami Hurricanes good for future
When he was hired to replace Mark Richt as the Miami Hurricanes head coach one of the first things Manny Diaz discussed at his introductory press conference in January was the standard that the players would be held to.
The Miami Hurricanes football players are being held to a higher standard in the Manny Diaz era than they were during the Mark Richt era. One of the reasons that Dan Enos was hired to be the offensive coordinator for Diaz is their similar beliefs in the standards that their players should be held to.
After going 19-29 for 214 yards and a touchdown in the season-opening 24-20 loss to Florida most observers were impressed by the play of redshirt freshman quarterback Jarren Williams. Enos stated during his press conference two days after the loss to the Gators that he always holds his players to the same standard.
Enos said he doesn’t care if the player is in his first game or 40th game in regards to the expectations of how the player performs. The hypocrisy that comes from many on social media will not be satisfied with their teams no matter what happens. Diaz alluded to criticism of Enos’ critiques of Williams.
During his weekly appearance on the Joe Rose show on Wednesday morning, Diaz stated that Enos did not only call out Williams mistakes. The Hurricanes first-year offensive coordinator and QB coach also praised Williams for what he did correctly. If fans want success they have to understand the standard the players will be held to.
Diaz went through the process of how they handle the Miami Hurricanes players and what he and his coaching staff expect from them. He defended Enos by stating that he has been transparent since being hired in January and what he wants from his QBs.
"“Dan also talked about all the things Jarren did right. We said this from Day One: we’re going to hold these guys to a very high standard. It’s funny how after Game One there’s a mentality of should we not hold them to a high standard…Protecting the quarterback is an 11-man job…One thing that Dan Enos has been on point about since the very first practice is ‘Hey, quarterback, if you don’t want to get sacked, that’s up to you’ — in terms of the way that you move the pocket, in terms of the way you go through your reads, in terms of the way you get the ball out.’Dan understands the position; He’s played the position. Look the standard around here is not going to change. We’re going to hold our guys to that way and you know what? They like it. Because they like the consistency of it.”"
Enos was the starting QB at Michigan State in 1989 and ’90. He led the Spartans to victories in the Aloha and Sun Bowls after those two seasons. Enos was the head coach at Central Michigan from 2010-14.
Enos was a huge addition to the Miami coaching staff during the 2019 offseason. Georgia and Alabama also wanted him as their offensive coordinator. Williams will be better off from the constructive criticism from Enos.
