Miami football: Five Hurricanes likely to get more playing time
Mark Pope signed with the Miami football program in the class of 2018 as a five-star signee at wide receiver according to Rivals.Com. In his year-plus with Miami Pope has been slow to pick up the offense and contribute on the field. Pope has three receptions for 23 yards in two seasons with the Hurricanes.
His playmaking ability and explosiveness in the open field have been likened to junior Jeff Thomas. If Pope can become a playmaker on Thomas’ level he will earn more playing time. Like Lingard, Miami needs a player who can make big plays on the field. Miami has been good in the short to intermediate passing game.
The Hurricanes need to improve getting the ball deep or breaking receivers for long gains via wide receiver screens and crossing patterns. The six plays over 20 yards in the passing game the Miami football ranks 62nd nationally. When you start to go up by 10-yard increments their national rank falls further.
Pope should help to give that number a boost. Miami has a deep and talented wide receiver corps. That has not shown beyond Thomas, graduate transfer K.J. Osborn and junior Mike Harley. Miami needs Sophomores Pope, Brian Hightower and Dee Wiggins to make an impact. At least one of the three needs to step up.
