The commitment of top 2021 quarterback prospect Jake Garcia to USC was a big blow to the Miami football program. The Hurricanes have plenty of time to recover with the 2021 class not able to sign for 15 months.

Jake Garcia is the type of quarterback that can change a football program. He is an elite talent and a quarterback that has not been on the Miami football team in three decades. The Hurricanes have plenty of time to get another QB and have four-star commit Tyler VanDyke committed for 2020.

There are several other QBs that Miami is looking at for the 2021 cycle. None are currently high on the Hurricanes, but a lot of change can happen in the next 15 months. It might be tough to get a commitment from an elite quarterback with Jarren Williams playing exceptionally well. Williams will be eligible for the 2021 NFL Draft.

Scouting Report

At the top of the list for the 2021 Miami recruiting class according to 247Sports is four-star dual-threat QB, Preston Stone of Dallas. Stone has two projections in the 247 Crystal Ball. One of for SMU and the other is undecided. It would be tough to imagine he would stay home to play for the Mustangs if Miami offers his a scholarship.

Most of the Power Five schools are recruiting Stone. Dan Enos as expected as the offensive coordinator and QB coach is the main recruiter for Stone according to 247sports. The 247 scouting report sounds somewhat similar to Williams. The difference is Stone’s gunslinger mentality. Williams tends to play it safer.

"“High-major quarterback prospect with requisite height and frame for the position. Not a towering prospect, but tall enough in the 6-foot-2 range. Lean with frame space to add bulk. Throws with accuracy, as evidenced by 60+ completion percentage in first two varsity seasons. Snappy, quick release with little wasted motion. Varies arm angles as needed. Light on his feet and does a good job extending plays. Finds receivers on the run and throws accurately under duress. Does not tuck and run, but keeps eyes downfield and looks to throw when escaping the pocket. That said, athletic enough to make plays as a runner. Willing to stand and deliver under the gun. Can drop it in the bucket in the vertical game. Initial velocity can improve. Gunslinger’s mentality that can lead to unnecessary chances at times. Will face significant jump in competition going from private school in Texas to Power Five level. One of the top 2021 QB’s nationally who will likely become a multi-year starter at the high-major level with early-round NFL Draft potential.”"

Scouting Report

Colton Gauthier seems more like a project than a player who can come in and compete right away for the starting job. As a player in the Class of 2021 that might work out better for the Miami football program. A lot will depend on the growth that Williams has and how long he stays in Coral Gables.
