That set the stage for a wild final 15 minutes. Virginia Tech went 80 yards in four plays in 1:35 on their first possession of the fourth quarter to seemingly ice the game with 12:43 remaining. Miami began a furious comeback over the next 9:27. It began when Miami answered Virginia Tech on a 10 play, 65-yard drive in 5:40.

Miami got back within 14 points on a Perry to Jeff Thomas 14-yard TD pass. Thomas had his best game of 2019 with six receptions for 124 yards and two touchdowns. Brevin Jordan continued to shine with 136 yards and his second TD on the season. Wide receiver K.J. Osborn was mostly silent with three receptions for 44 yards.

The Miami defense which was outstanding in the third quarter held Virginia Tech to another three and out following the TD drive. Perry led the Hurricanes on a six-play, 62-yard drive in 1:12. Manny Diaz had good foreshadowing going for a two-point conversion. Perry and Thomas connected again from 25 yards out.

The TD and two-point conversion run by DeeJay Dallas cut the Hokies lead to 35-29. Many questioned Diaz going for two, but it was a prescient move by the Hurricanes’ first-year head coach. The Miami defense held Virginia Tech to one yard and their second straight three and out. It didn’t take Miami long on the next drive.

Dallas burst 62 yards for a TD on the second play of the drive to even the game at 35. All the Hurricanes needed to tie the game was a Baxa extra point to take the lead with 3:16 remaining in the game. For the fifth time this season and second on a point after touchdown, Baxa missed a kick. That kept the game tied at 35.
