Miami football head coach Manny Diaz announced on Wednesday after practice that redshirt sophomore N’Kosi Perry will get the start at quarterback on Friday night against Virginia over redshirt freshman Jarren Williams.

The Miami football team will not have a quarterback controversy. After coming in and nearly leading an epic comeback on Saturday, Hurricanes head coach Manny Diaz announced that redshirt sophomore N’Kosi Perry will start in Friday night’s game against Virginia. Redshirt freshman Jarren Williams is out with shoulder soreness.

Williams reportedly was still suffering from the after-effects of hits that he took in Miami’s 17-12 victory over Central Michigan last month. The Georgia native threw three interceptions in seven passing attempts in Miami’s surprising 42-35 loss to Virginia Tech on Saturday. Perry relieved Williams and almost led a Miami comeback.

Perry threw for a career-high 422 yards and four touchdowns with one interception in almost leading Miami back from a 28-0 deficit against Virginia Tech. It was the most passing yards by a Miami QB since Stephen Morris set the program record with 566 in 2012 against North Carolina State. Friday will be Perry’s seventh start.

All seven of Perry’s career starts occurred as a redshirt freshman in 2018. He had trouble with accuracy sharing the time at QB with then redshirt senior Malik Rosier. Perry completed 50.8 percent of his passes for 1,091 yards with 13 TD and six interceptions last season. He has greatly improved his accuracy in 2019.

Perry has completed 63.6 percent of his passes for 501 yards with five TDs and one costly interception that came against Virginia Tech. His numbers have gone up across the board this season. Including his completion percentage, Perry has also improved his yards per attempt to 9.1 and yards per completion 10.1.
