Diaz elaborated on more of the reasoning behind Perry starting and vaguely mentioned Williams’ injury as

quoted in the Sun-Sentinel.

"“Jarren Williams is dealing with an upper-extremity issue that leaves him less than 100 percent…I think we all saw last Saturday the improvement in his game. And we’re excited to get behind him, ride behind him, and find a way to beat a very well coached and tough-minded Virginia football team.”"

Perry gives Miami a better chance to have a more potent downfield passing game. The Hurricanes have 21 completions for first downs, 13 of 15 yards or more and six of 25 yards or more in Perry’s 57 attempts this season. Under Williams, Miami has 50 completions for first down, 21 of 15 yards or more and 10 or 25 yards plus.

Williams has 89 completions in 123 attempts this season. He has had 40.6 percent of his attempts and 56.1 percent of his completions go for first downs, 17 percent of his attempts and 23.5 percent of his completions for a 15 yard gain or more and 8.1 percent of his attempts and 11.2 percent of his completions for 25 plus yards.

Perry has completed 35 passes in 55 attempts in 2019. The redshirt sophomore has had 38.1 percent of attempts and 60 percent of completions go for first downs, 23.6 percent of attempts and 41.8 percent of completions go for 15 yards or more and 10.9 percent of attempts and 17.1 percent of completions go for 25 plus yards.
