Miami football legend Ed Reed succinctly backed Hurricanes head coach Manny Diaz in a tweet on Monday night. Reed spoke out over the weekend about wanting an unspecified coaching job.
The Twitterverse for the Miami football team was aflutter following the Hurricanes 28-21 overtime loss to Georgia Tech on Saturday. Numerous Miami football alums spoke out on twitter about what the Hurricanes need to do following the loss to the Yellow Jackets. Legendary Miami RB Clinton Portis received the strongest response.
Legendary Miami safety Ed Reed stated in his tweet that Miami does not need a new coach and their struggles were related to growing pains. The Hurricanes’ four losses this season have been by a combined 21 points. Saturday’s loss to Georgia Tech came by a bizarre set of combined circumstances.
Three missed chipshot field goals in the second half, a Georgia Tech fumble recovery in Miami’s end zone and a hall of fame throw from the Yellow Jackets punter helped tip the game in favor of Georgia Tech. For any of those circumstances to happen a lot has to go in favor of the Yellow Jackets.
Georgia Tech would not have won the game without any of those events going their way. It was a series of unfortunate events in a season that has been full of them for Miami. The Hurricanes two FBS wins in 2019 have been by a combined 14 points. The outcomes for the Hurricanes against FBS teams have been tight in 2019.
Reed is not the only Miami football alum to support Diaz and his staff since the Hurricanes lost to Georgia Tech on Saturday. Former Miami offensive linemen, Rashad Butler who co-hosts the Miami postgame on WQAM with Danny “Hollywood” Rabinowitz and Kelvin Harris have been very outspoken in their support on twitter.
Harris is one of the most outspoken, articulate and active of the Miami football alums on social media. He urges the Miami fan base to have patience. Harris is right. Too many fans of virtually every team in every sport react to nearly play and game. Fans have a greater voice and impact than ever before.
Potential Miami recruits see the reactions of the fans. Some players care, others don’t pay attention. For the ones that do, what the fans have to say and how they say it can influence a player’s decision on which football program he signs with. Jumping down a player or coach’s throat on every play can be impactful.
Miami will not be favored on the road the next two weeks against Pittsburgh and Florida State. A 3-6 start would panic the Miami fanbase. It would not mean its time to replace any of the coaching staff. While this year had promise, it’s still a multi-year process. Former Miami football players have been in the trenches and locker rooms.
