4) 2000-Miami 27 Florida State 24

Miami entered the 2000 game with Florida State with a five-game losing streak of the Seminoles and with losses in six of the last seven against FSU. Florida State was the defending National Champion and was in the final year of a three year stretch of consecutive appearances in the BCS National Championship game.

The Miami football team took a 17-0 lead at halftime. The Seminoles came storming back and took the lead on a Chris Weinke to Atrews Bell 29 yard touchdown pass with 1:37 remaining. The Hurricanes had managed only a Todd Sievers field late in the third quarter throughout the second half.

Sophomore quarterback Ken Dorsey led the Hurricanes back quickly. Miami drove for the winning touchdown in 51 seconds when in legendary broadcaster Verne Lundquist’s words “caught, touchdown, (Jeremy) Shockey, the backup tight end” which was received from Dorsey from 13 yards out with 46 seconds remaining.

That left Florida State and Weinke plenty of time to get in position to try a field goal to send the game to overtime. As they had done numerous times before the Seminoles missed and the Miami football team had their victory.

Despite the win over Florida State the Seminoles still edged the Miami football team out of a spot in the Orange Bowl and the BCS National Championship game. The Seminoles would go on to lose 13-2 to Oklahoma. That was the end of FSU’s run.
