Miami football gets record setting day from Jarren Williams to rout Louisville
Jarren Williams set the Miami football program record with six touchdown passes on Saturday as the Hurricanes routed Louisville 52-27 on Homecoming and Senior Day at Hard Rock Stadium.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Jarren Williams set the Miami football program record and tied the ACC record with six touchdown passes as the Hurricanes dominated Louisville in a 52-27 victory. Miami and Louisville both had big plays in a back and forth first half before the Hurricanes pulled away in the second quarter.
Williams was exceptionally efficient throwing the six TDs. He needed to complete only 15 passes in 22 attempts for 253 yards and the six TDs. Six touchdown passes on 15 completions and only 22 attempts were part of an explosive Miami offense. The Hurricanes also ran for 197 yards and another TD.
Junior running back DeeJay Dallas had 15 carries for 97 yards and the one rushing TD. Cam’Ron Harris contributed another 78 yards on eight carries and long of 46. Dee Wiggins and Mike Harley caught two touchdowns each and sophomore tight end Will Mallory and Dallas had one each. Mallory started in place of Brevin Jordan.
Harley and Wiggins both set career highs for receiving yards. Harley led Miami with six receptions and 116 yards and Wiggins had three for 85 a week after he scored his first TD in a Miami football uniform. Miami got on the board first with a seven-play, 92-yard drive in 2:55 that culminated with a five-yard Dallas TD run.
That’s when the fireworks began. Tutu Atwell took a short pass 80 yards for a TD on the Cardinals’ next drive to tie the game. Miami answered Louisville in one play. Williams and Wiggins connected from 67 yards to take the lead back 15 seconds after Atwell’s TD. Miami extended the lead exactly two minutes later.
Dallas scored his second TD of the quarter to push the Miami lead to 21-7. Louisville was able to cut the lead to seven 39 seconds into the second quarter. The Hurricanes had two more second-quarter TDs to go to halftime with a 35-14 lead. Williams finished the first half with 216 yards passing yards and four TDs.
All was not perfect. Louisville had 496 yards of total offense and 27 points. Louisville hurt themselves continually throughout the game. Atwell lost a fumble after muffing a punt and threw two interceptions. On the Miami football postgame show Rashad Butler stated the defense let down with the lead.
That has to be expected as Miami took a 52-21 lead to the fourth quarter. Louisville outgained Miami 168-21 in the fourth quarter. Two of Louisville’s four touchdowns came on long plays. Atwell had the long TD in the first half and Hassan Hall added a 58-yard run in the fourth quarter. Miami’s special teams were encouraging.
Senior Jimmy Murphy recovered the Atwell muffed punt and Al Blades got a piece of a Louisville punt that went only 22 yards. Blades later added an interception in the second half. The Hurricanes victory over Louisville was their most impressive of the season and they are now bowl eligible.
