A plethora of injuries and an anemic second-half offense led to 27-17 loss by the Miami football team in their 2019 regular-season finale at Duke. The Hurricanes dropped to 6-6 with the loss and will find out their bowl fate a week from Sunday.

The victory by Duke over the Miami football team sent the Hurricanes to 6-6 and their worst regular-season record since they also finished the regular season 6-6. It was the most decisive loss Miami took in 2019. All six of the losses by Miami in 2019 have come by 10 points or less. There are no more excuses.

The offense could not move the football, they were missing two offensive linemen in their rotation and the defense could not hold the lead after three quarters as Miami collapsed in another inexplicable loss in a season full of them. The most impactful injuries were to tight end Brevin Jordan and running back Cam Harris.

Jordan returned shortly after mossing two games before leaving early in the first quarter and not returning. Harris exited in the second quarter after carrying the ball eight times for 44 yards and a touchdown and adding one reception for no yards.

Harris earned the start in place of DeeJay Dallas who was lost for the season last week. Dallas suffered a dislocated elbow in last week’s devastating loss to Florida International. One bright spot for the Miami football team was backup tight end Will Mallory tying a career-high with four receptions for a career-high 93 yards.

Mallory has eight receptions for 164 yards and a TD in the last two games. Miami reached the end zone first in the second quarter after Duke had a 40-yard field goal from A.J. Reed in the first quarter to give the Blue Devils the lead. A Harris eight-yard eight seconds into the second quarter gave Miami the 7-3 lead.

Duke answered with a 24-yard TD run by Harris and another Reed FG to take a 13-7 lead. A Jarren Williams 15-yard TD pass off a screen to backup RB Robert Burns put Miami in front to stay 14-13 at halftime.

A Camden Price field goal in the third quarter extended the Miami lead to 17-13 that the Hurricanes would take to the fourth quarter. Miami was unable to close the game. A Deon Jackson two-yard run and Harris to Jalon Calhoun 49-yard TD pass spurred the Blue Devils to a 27-17 victory.

It was the first time in the history of the rivalry between Duke and Miami that the Blue Devils defeated the Hurricanes in back to back seasons. Defensive end Jon Garvin led the Miami defense with 10 tackles, three tackles for loss and two sacks.

Junior linebacker Michael Pinckney tied Garvin for the team lead with 10 tackles and added two TFLs of his own. Its another disappointing end to a season that could have been much better.
